Architects consider it the best building in the world: a post-apocalyptic and futuristic church in Spain

Posted on 27 December 2025

The best building in the world is in Spain. This has been confirmed by the World Architecture Festival, which has crowned one of the most innovative churches in Tenerife as the best architectural construction on the entire planet. This is the temple of the Holy Redeemer in the Chumberas neighborhood and its futuristic appearance will leave you amazed.

The Church of the Holy Redeemer is an imposing brutalist temple, built in exposed concrete and volcanic stone, because it is inspired by the nature and geology of the Canary Island itself. Its austerity in materials and decoration is offset by its masterful use of light, modeling and intensifying the raw beauty of its interior spaces.

This building does not have normal windows. The church takes advantage of Tenerife's sunlight to illuminate itself through overhead openings filled with metal and glass, which flood the space with a changing glow: as the day progresses and the sun changes position, it illuminates and highlights different corners. This expressive way of using light also applies to the church's cross, created from two cracks in the façade.

Not only does the Canarian church stand out for its lighting efficiency, but also its acoustics. Thanks to the use of materials such as concrete and porous stone, the entire building has a sound capacity similar to that of an opera house. It is an architectural and sculptural work of art, made by the Canarian Fernando Menis.

This church also has a community center and a public plaza. Therefore, more than a religious temple, it is a meeting and meeting space, which has served to revitalize a peripheral neighborhood. Not in vain, the building was built thanks to donations from the parish and the neighbors, so they deserved to receive such a wonderful place in return. Now, the Most Holy Redeemer has put Las Chumberas in the international spotlight.
