Experts tell us every time they can about the importance of keeping hair clean. There is still a belief that hair loss is not beneficial, but in reality fresh and healthy hair begins with washing. But when it comes to going to the hairdresser to touch up the dye, we have heard a lot that it is better to go with dirty hair instead of freshly washed hair.
Regarding this, hairdresser Víctor del Valle has a lot to say. The expert with 20 years of experience explained to the media El Español why dirty hair can interfere with coloring. There is a widespread belief that dye “grabs” better when hair is dirty, but it is still another hair myth.
The first thing that the stylist highlights is that the natural oils of the scalp are not the same as the accumulation of cosmetic products. According to Víctor, when the hair is very dirty due to: oils, sprays or dry shampoo, a film forms on the hair fiber and this can prevent the dye from taking on well and the result will not be as uniform. “Going to the hairdresser with very dirty hair can make it difficult for the dye to be absorbed,” he explains.
To help us understand it better, the expert makes a simile with a piece of furniture that needs painting: “Everything becomes a layer that blocks the action of the dye. It's like trying to paint on a greasy surface. The result will never be good,” he warns.
Now, with this explanation, the professional wants to clarify that “it is not about arriving with freshly washed hair, but nor with a saturated scalp,” he explains. You have to avoid extremes, and don't go to the hairdresser with your hair loaded with products.
Hairdresser Álex Sestelo also thinks the same, when we are going to dye the hair “it is better that it be clean and hydrated because this way we equalize the porosity and the color is fixed uniformly,” he explains.
When should you wash your hair before coloring?
Even so, there may be exceptions and depending on the coloring to be performed, it may be more beneficial for the hair to be freshly washed or a little dirty. : “If it is for an alkaline color, it is better to dye it when the hair is dirty, and if it is with an acid color, when it is clean,” explains Víctor.
In general terms, the specialist is clear that it is not a question of going to extremes. When it comes to going to the salon with dirty hair, it is with hair that has not been washed in one or two days, which is a very different thing from having saturated hair.
Therefore, the ideal is not to use many products from styling before going to the hairdresser, since all this waste that accumulates interferes with the coloring, and the result may not be as perfect as desired.
