One of the biggest facial concerns is spots and in summer things don't get better. In general, spots develop due to an overproduction of melanin and among the most common causes is sun exposure. But it is not the only factor, also the passage of time, hormonal changes or even the marks left by an acne outbreak.
The expert Vicente Calduch, pharmacist and CEO of CALDUCH, indicates that facial spots do not disappear on their own, which is why it is important to choose products suitable for this specific skin need, and this is where vitamin C comes into play.
This active ingredient over the years has established itself as one of the active ingredients with the greatest scientific support to improve tone uniformity, prevent the appearance of new hyperpigmentation and restore luminosity to the skin. But in this sense we must keep in mind that not all vitamins C that we find on the market are equally effective, and this is something that we must take into account.
One of the best qualities that vitamin C has, according to the pharmacist, is its ability to reduce stains but at the same time it also prevents new ones from appearing. “When we talk about spots, we usually only think about correcting them, but just as important as treating them is preventing their formation. Vitamin C acts by regulating the production of melanin, which helps to progressively blur existing hyperpigmentation and makes it difficult for new tone alterations caused by the sun or oxidative stress to appear,” says Vicente.
Not all vitamin C are equally effective against stains
But as we told you, there are currently many creams and serums with vitamin C, although not all of these formulas are equally effective. Therefore, after use we can notice more obvious results with some products than with others. This is because “one of the most important aspects is the chemical form used. The stabilized and fat-soluble versions maintain their activity better and reach the skin more efficiently. This allows the treatment to be more constant and the results on tone uniformity to be more visible with continued use,” clarifies the expert.
Although beyond choosing an effective formula, it is extremely important to be very clear that consistency is the true anti-blemish treatment, as Calduch says. “Spots do not disappear overnight. Cell renewal requires time and, therefore, daily application is essential. Used constantly, vitamin C helps the skin progressively regain a more uniform, luminous and healthy appearance,” he explains.
Sun protection is non-negotiable
Adding a serum with vitamin C to our skincare routine does not mean that we should not also use sun protection. As the pharmacist clarifies, sun protection is still the best complement to any serum with vitamin C. This means that on the one hand we need to protect the skin with a sun cream and on the other hand a vitamin C serum (Calduch Illuminating Serum Nº3) that will help protect the skin against free radicals thanks to its great antioxidant power.
“No anti-blemish treatment will be truly effective if the skin continues to be exposed to ultraviolet radiation without protection. Vitamin C offers an important antioxidant action against the damage caused by free radicals, but it must always be accompanied by a broad-spectrum photoprotector to prevent spots from reappearing,” Calduch clarifies.
The perfect vitamin C for dull skin
Beyond improving skin tone and blurring blemishes, vitamin C also improves luminosity. “Many times skin with hyperpigmentation has a dull and uneven appearance. Vitamin C not only helps to unify the tone, but also enhances the skin's natural luminosity, making the face look more rested and with a visibly more uniform appearance,” highlights the expert.
But not only that, but with a vitamin C serum we can address different aspects of the skin beyond spots. “We also reinforce the barrier function, promote collagen synthesis and protect against oxidative damage,” adds the pharmacist.
For this reason, we are talking about a clear example of what a good product with vitamin C can offer us, a great option to treat the signs of aging: “This combination allows the skin to not only reduce the appearance of spots, but also to gain quality, firmness and resistance against future external aggressions,” says Vicente.
