The most experienced hairdressers agree: "For gray hair, the most important thing is to use a shampoo that keeps the hair hydrated and respects the needs of the scalp."

Far from hiding gray hair, many women today accept it naturally and end up forming part of their image as just another accessory. But what you need to know is that even if you renounce the use of dyes, gray hair needs specific care so that it looks beautiful, is soft and does not become frizzy. Because since it is hair that does not have melanin or lipids, it becomes rougher and more rigid and that translates, even if we don't like it, into hair with a greater tendency to frizz.

Gray hair is rebellious, that's how it is, and that is why it must be approached in a different way. According to experts, hydration is essential, which is why masks, oils and conditioner are the products that cannot be missing. Pharmacist Helena Rodero (@helena.rodero) recommends reverse washing for gray hair to better maintain the natural nutrition of white hair.

On the other hand, hairdresser Víctor del Valle emphasizes that “the most important thing is to use a shampoo that keeps the hair hydrated and respects the needs of the scalp,” he comments. Now, beyond hydration there is another gesture that we do daily and that can make a big difference, especially if we do it in the right way and with the tools that work best. We are referring to correct brushing.

Hairstylist Fran Galán, director of The Beauty Concept Hair salon, recommends brushes with “natural bristles, mixed bristles or flexible, separate bristles” to avoid frizz. But if you have to choose between these options, the expert comments that he chooses “mixed brushes without hesitation, since they take care of our hair without breaking it, without frizzing it and are softer while polishing,” he explains.

Gray hair expert Lucía Patón recommends trying the round wooden brush with boar bristles (not vegan, remember), “it has given me tremendous softness, spectacular shine and no frizz,” she points out. Also the hairdresser Alberto Sanguino (@alberto.sanguino) has recommended to the CLARA publication “use natural bristle, wooden or carbon fiber brushes (yes it is vegan)” and “avoid plastics.”

This is because not all brushes polish the hair fiber in the same way. Therefore, choosing one brush or another can change the way your hair behaves. In general, plastic generates more static electricity and this is precisely what gray hair needs the least.

But if the material of the brush matters, the technique in which we brush is no less important. In this sense, Sanguino believes that you have to “start brushing from the ends, gently, so as not to tighten the hair or encourage the cuticle to open,” he adds. The important thing is not to pull and to do this you have to hold the hair while undoing the knots.
