Gray hair is no longer something that many women seek to hide and has become part of their identity. However, wearing white or gray hair also requires specific care to keep it soft, shiny and hydrated. To do this, you have to choose the right products and also know which ones are not so necessary to take care of gray hair.
Gray hair expert Beatriz Patón has explained on her Instagram (@foreveryoungbcn) that “gray hair does need care, but it is one thing to take care of hair and quite another to think that it needs to be corrected because it is gray.”
“When we decide to go gray, our hair may need hydration, nutrition, protection against heat, luminosity or control of yellow tones if it needs it,” explains Patón. With this, what the content creator means is that gray hair needs care, yes, but practically using the same products as any other person who does not have gray hair but takes care of their hair.
What Beatriz does emphasize is that “dyed, gray hair needs much more care than natural hair. Because if we dye our gray hair, we are subjecting our hair to a chemical process, and obviously it requires much more care,” she comments.
In any case, “dying or leaving gray hair is a personal choice. And neither option should be judged,” says the expert. You just have to be aware that dyed hair requires more care so that the hair does not look dull and dry. In short, so that it has a beautiful and healthy appearance.
Using too many products can dull gray hair
Hair care, whether you have gray hair or not, is a topic that continues to gain prominence on social networks. We see more and more tips, routines and products aimed at keeping hair healthy, shiny and beautiful. For this reason, many content creators share their own hair methods and routines, such as the well-known Abbey Yung method. Taking this care as a reference, Beatriz Patón has analyzed which products from the first steps of this routine she would incorporate and which she would discard to care for gray hair.
“Because taking care of gray hair doesn't mean filling the bathroom with products.
Gray hair can benefit greatly from good hydration, but we must also take into account the accumulation of products, which can reduce luminosity and make our white look duller,” says Beatriz.
Her analysis is interesting because it breaks the belief that gray hair needs a more elaborate hair routine than any other hair. When in reality, each hair has its own peculiarities: while some hair is finer and lacks volume, others have a rougher texture, tend to dry out or are more difficult to shape. Hence the importance of adapting care to the characteristics of each hair, instead of using the same products and following the same steps in all cases.
This error turns off gray hair
Michele Dal Pozzolo, hairstylist and artistic director of Rossano Ferretti HairSpa, points out that the buildup of waste can influence the appearance of gray hair. In an article published on the firm's website, the expert explains that remains of hair products, minerals in water and pollution can modify the way white hair reflects light.
The specialist advises taking special care of the washing routine and, when it is necessary to eliminate accumulated residue, make two applications of a mild moisturizing shampoo. The first application is used to remove dirt and product remains, while the second allows you to thoroughly clean the scalp.
In addition, the expert advises complementing hair care with a leave-in conditioner or a light hydrating serum, applied from the mid-lengths to the ends, especially if the hair is dry or frizzy. To prevent it from losing volume, it is recommended to use a small amount of product and opt for light formulas that do not weigh it down, especially in the case of finer gray hair.
Violet shampoo yes, but with care
Violet shampoo is one of the essential products for caring for gray hair, but it is important to know how to use it correctly to obtain the best results.
On the other hand, dermatologist Ana Molina recommends using purple shampoo twice a week and alternating it with a mild shampoo. This point is very important, since toning shampoo has a tendency to dry out the hair, and furthermore, if we abuse it or leave it in the hair for a long time, it can leave violet reflections.
Hairdresser Gabriel Samra emphasizes that violet shampoo is not a shampoo to clean hair, it is a shampoo to neutralize. For this reason: “It should be used for a very short time and not so often, just to prevent the hair from turning yellow or warm,” explains Samra.
