Silicones are great allies to avoid hair frizz, this is what an expert says

Posted on 10 March 2026

Sometimes we have the impression that it is impossible to control frizz and even though we use straighteners and apply anti-frizz sprays, our hair seems to have a life of its own. But we are not talking about controlled frizz like Kate Middleton's beautiful hair, but rather a more “witchy” and less attractive effect.

But when we thought all was lost, we found advice from Isabel Rodriguez (@isabelrdz00) that is based on science, specifically to fight frizz. The expert begins by saying that she recommends supermarket shampoos, since they are neither bad nor of worse quality nor less efficient than more expensive shampoos.

Just as she is in favor of using conditioning products with silicones, since as Isabel maintains, “silicones help a lot to lubricate, reduce friction and align the cuticle, so the surface becomes smoother. So the hair looks less frizzy, shinier and helps reduce friction,” she adds.

Use pre-shampoo

To start a perfect anti-frizz routine, Rodriguez advises using pre-shampoo to create a protective barrier from mid-lengths to ends before getting into the shower. “For example, a perfect pre-shampoo is coconut oil, which is very beneficial due to its chemical structure that allows it to enter beyond the cuticle, it goes to the cortex where the proteins and lipids are and then helps prevent the loss of proteins and helps replace lost lipids,” he adds.

As coconut oil, he recommends OGX Coconut Milk Nourishing Anti-Breakage Serum. But for those who prefer other options to coconut oil, it is recommended to use the mask or conditioner as a pre-shampoo, and if possible they have silicones.

As an extra tip, “wet the hair before applying the oil so that it is better distributed and start from the ends upwards, but always applying extra to the ends,” adds Isabel.

Use shampoo with sulfates to avoid product buildup

When washing your hair and applying shampoo, the expert's recommendation is not to concentrate all the product from the mid-lengths to the ends because it can dry out and leave the hair rough. That is why “the shampoo only concentrates on the scalp because it is to clean this area. But if you are a person who uses many products such as gels or ointments, it is necessary to use a shampoo with sulfate to help remove the excess,” clarifies Rodriguez.

Use conditioner or mask with silicones

These two products are basic in a normal routine, but if what we are looking for is to avoid frizz, then they are practically mandatory. Both the conditioner and the mask “help a lot to protect the hair, and these conditioners or masks not only have silicones but also have oils, lipids and other ingredients that help condition the hair, which is the first thing to reduce frizz,” he says.

But if something really worries those who have fine hair, it is that their hair feels heavy after using conditioners, so if you feel that everything leaves your hair very heavy, you can use glosses like Wonder Water Elvive that are very watery and light.

“It is also important to distribute the product correctly without leaving sections unapplied, and don't be afraid to be generous if you think you need to use more product,” highlights Isabel. Another point to keep in mind is that when we have the conditioner on, we collect the hair with a clip to avoid the issue of acne on the back since the mask or conditioner can occlude.

Use a leave-in, styling cream or hair oil

A leave-in or leave-in conditioner or also hair oils are perfect products to condition, lubricate and soften hair. As the expert says, “it helps keep hair soft and manageable and at the same time creates a barrier that protects hair from environmental humidity.” Among their recommendations is Garnier Vitamin Force 10 in 1 or Elvive Extraordinary Oil.

Shine serum or cream

As finishing products we have different options and they are great allies to control frizz. Isabel comments that to give shine to the hair and provide extra softness, products such as Argan Oil Of Morocco OGX or Pantene End Sealing Serum are ideal. She usually uses them between washes or when she is going out and looking for a shot of silkiness.

Use microfiber towels and sleep with a silk hat

Do not rub the hair with the towel, it is better to press gently instead of rubbing and use microfiber towels or a cotton t-shirt. To keep frizz at bay at bedtime, it is advisable to wear a silk or satin hat to prevent frizz and, in the case of curls, maintain their shape. Silk does not retain as much moisture and this helps the products you apply to your hair stay in the hair and not be absorbed by the hat.
