When the good weather arrives, the feet, and more specifically the heels, quickly regain prominence. However, when autumn begins, they are once again forgotten until the following year. The hardness, dryness and friction of more closed footwear cause the feet to lose that healthy and cared for appearance. For this reason, as we always say, you have to do your homework throughout the year and not just limit yourself to doing a tune-up when it's time to show your feet.
Podiatrist María Jesús Lechuga tells the publication Clara that: “One of the main mistakes is to remember our feet only when the time comes to show them.” The ideal is to take care of your feet every day, and there are quite common mistakes that can cause your feet to end up with some problems. “Not drying properly between the toes after the pool or shower and using moisturizing creams between the toes,” adds the podiatrist.
Calluses and blisters increase with friction
Shoes or boots that are too hard can contribute to rubbing and calluses. This happens due to the friction or pressure that the footwear exerts on some points of the feet, and cracks or calluses appear as a defensive response. “If there is also high pressure in that area, the skin thickens to protect itself and can cause
Beyond the calluses, blisters can also appear. Although in summer suffering from them is a classic since it is the moment in which we go from having closed feet to wearing sandals and the slightest friction can cause them to come out. Heat, humidity and friction are the perfect elements. Although this does not mean that blisters cannot appear at any time of the year, since they can also occur when wearing new shoes or after walking more than normal.
What to do to prevent cracks and calluses
The best daily gesture we can do for our feet is to establish a good hydration routine. The ideal thing to have well-cared for feet is to “hydrate your feet every day, not only when they are already cracked, with a foot cream that contains urea,” advises María Jesús.
The same advice is what podiatrist Idoia Pascalet provides to Clara magazine. Creams with urea promote “better absorption of the plant skin and, therefore, it will be more hydrated than with a normal cream,” he points out. But if moisturizing foot cream is essential, what will change the state of your feet the most is consistency. Maintaining a good hydration routine before going to bed or after showering will make a big difference.
The foot care firm Pedicare also highlights the importance of hydration: “It is absolutely essential to hydrate the feet as often as possible and with a specific product. This way we achieve more elasticity and resistance, the skin is more comfortable and healthy. Keeping the feet hydrated means providing them with an extraordinary barrier against skin infections, calluses, peeling, etc…”, explain the firm's experts.
Another piece of advice that experts agree on is precisely footwear. Both recommend alternating footwear, especially in summer when the use of flip-flops and sandals practically becomes the go-to footwear day and night. “At a biomechanical level, there are calluses that appear due to poor footing. The ideal is to avoid or reduce the number of hours of wearing sandals and, on long walks, opt for buckled sandals or sports shoes,” explains Pascalet.
It is better to leave flip-flops for specific moments and choose everyday footwear with more specific characteristics. “You have to assess the stability, support, flexibility and how that footwear adapts to each person,” says María Jesús. In this sense, the podiatrist recommends designs that support the foot well, with some cushioning, that the base feels stable and of course, that the sole is not excessively thin.
