There is not always a need to use many products or complicate things on a daily basis, you just have to know how to use the right ones and follow some advice from those who know best.
A classic in makeup is the use of black pencil to highlight the look, and although it is a great ally, it is not so much when we are celebrating our birthdays. Marking the water line in black is a resource that has always been there, and women of all ages use it. The problem is that it is not the most flattering pencil nor the one that opens the eyes the most.
Precisely, one of the facial features that we like to enhance the most is our gaze. However, with age, this can also become one of the most complicated areas when applying makeup. The eyelid looks more hooded, so you have to choose specific eyeliner to lift the drooping eyelid or play with shadows of different shades to lift your eyes, as makeup artist María Ferjol explains.
Better than a black pencil is a brown one
As we said, the black pencil is a basic and you don't have to banish it from your toiletry bag, you just have to know what it works for and what it doesn't. One of the best functions that we can give it, according to makeup artists, is to enhance the eyelash line. An ultra-fine liner well placed between the eyelashes will give a more populated and defined effect to the area.
As explained by Patricia Carretero, official makeup artist at Perricone MD: “Many times we think that to define the eye we need very strong lines or very dark colors, but the exact opposite usually happens: a thick or very marked liner can harden the look and make the eye appear smaller. A fine line is better, very integrated between the eyelashes and with a slight rise in the outer corner, which we can even do with a shadow,” comments the expert.
Makeup artist Lisa Eldridge has the same opinion according to her statements to the British newspaper Guardian: “The black eyeliner that you may have used for decades can begin to slightly close the eye, while softening the tone or elevating its placement can create a fresher, more awake look,” she notes.
The makeup artist Bárbara Martos, from her social networks, explains that after fifty, very dark makeup does not help the eyes look fresher and younger: “If it is not applied subtly, the black pencil on the water line can make you look older.”
On the other hand, if there is a shade that makeup artists highly recommend, it is brown. What is achieved with a medium brown tone is to intensify and highlight the look but without hardening or tiring the area. Celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles commented on the publication Harper's Bazaar “Black can be very harsh, but a dark espresso or even deep purples can play up that drama with a touch of flattering warmth,” she notes.
From 40, 50 or 60, intense black hardens a lot, creating a very strong contrast that highlights expression lines more. On the other hand, the browns remain intense but with a warmer and softer touch, and they also integrate better, so they look more natural and elegant.
How to apply shadow to open and elevate your eyes
Highlighting and beautifying your eyes after 40 with makeup is more than possible. You just have to follow certain guidelines to open and elevate your gaze. In this sense, eye shadows are the perfect allies. Makeup artist Bárbara Martos shows how with light and brown shadows, you can rejuvenate your look just by knowing how to place them in the right place. “First you apply the light tones and then you take the intense brown tone and apply it to the corner of the eye and outwards,” explains Martos.
The same recommendation is what celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm makes to the magazine Harper's Bazaar: “Small adjustments, like raising the shadow in the outer corner or keeping dark colors slightly higher, can make a big difference.” By using the shadow at this point, a visual effect of push up that transforms the look almost immediately.
But if what we want is to line the eyelashes, then what experts recommend is to replace the black pencil with a brown shadow. The shadows work much better and with a beveled pencil it will be much easier to outline. You just have to take a small amount of shadows and rest the brush on the base of the eyelashes and make an upward stroke until you reach the end.
