Miriam Arenas, pharmacist: "If you give a dry scalp a shampoo with strong cleansing agents, it can irritate, itch or even flake the scalp."

When we talk about hair care, we usually focus all our attention on dryness, frizz or lack of shine and forget a fundamental part: the scalp. And that is precisely where the origin of some common discomforts such as itching, tightness or peeling may lie. Therefore, choosing the right shampoo for your needs is especially important, since not all shampoos are for all scalps.

In fact, using formulas that are too aggressive on dry or sensitive scalps can end up aggravating the problem instead of solving it. This is explained by pharmacist Miriam Arenas (@farmatologist), who insists on the importance of choosing cleansing agents well according to the needs of the scalp. Likewise, if you notice that your hair loses its clean feeling shortly after washing it, you may be blaming your hair when, in reality, the answer may lie in the product you use.

The expert begins by saying that perhaps all the drama we have with our hair can be due to the shampoo we use. “If the shampoo we use is not the most appropriate, it can increase the hair problems we have,” he comments.

The reason, according to the pharmacist, is quite simple and has to do with the needs of each type of scalp. “If you give an oily scalp a shampoo without powerful cleansing molecules or that does have oily ingredients, this is what will make you wash it in the morning and at night you will already have it dirty,” he points out.

But the wrong choice can also have the opposite effect. “If you give a dry or very dry scalp a shampoo with powerful cleansing agents, they can irritate, cause itching and flake the scalp,” warns the expert.

Therefore, while an oily scalp may need more effective cleansing to remove excess sebum, for a dry scalp it is better to opt for gentler formulas. By not having that layer of protective oil that helps keep the skin comfortable, cleaning that is too intense can be counterproductive. In these cases, shampoos that incorporate oily ingredients can help cleanse without drying out the area even more.
