I live in a coastal area in the north of Fuerteventura and the shower water is devilish. It's full of lime and minerals, which leave my hair looking like I'd used it to mop the floor. Gone are the days when I lived in Madrid (with the best water in the world, clichés exist for a reason) and had great hair. Or so I thought, because my new shower filter has changed everything and deserves love, applause and to be shared with everyone.
How water quality affects hair
The hardness of the water greatly affects the hair and not only on a cosmetic level. Studies confirmed that hair exposed to hard water accumulates many more minerals, such as calcium or magnesium, which increase the tendency to breakage and, therefore, more short frizzy hairs. In addition, these components are deposited in the hair fiber, making the hair coarser, duller and dryer to the touch.
In my case, I notice it a lot, because I came from Madrid to Fuerteventura. In Madrid, the water is very little mineralized due to the geology of the region and its origin from freshwater reservoirs. There, my hair was soft, shiny and super pretty, something I still notice when I visit and I love it.
However, on the Majorera island the drinking water comes from the sea and is treated in a desalination plant, so it retains more mineral salts. This is noticeable in the taste of the water, like lime, but also in how it leaves your hair: dull, super dehydrated, rough and with a lot of frizz. I've improved it with moisturizing products, but you never forget how beautiful your hair is in a good hair day.
This occurs in many coastal places and is very common on the islands and in the Levante area. In fact, at home we drink bottled water and only use tap water for cooking (if it is going to boil), for watering and for showering. We have changed the latter, because the new shower filter has greatly reduced the presence of minerals in the water and it shows.
The Philips AWP1775CH/10 shower filter
I did a ton of research on different shower filters, paying attention to quality and budget. There are very expensive ones and they offer the same results as a cheaper one. But, above all, replacements every four or six months have to be affordable to compensate. And, in my case, being available, something that can never be taken for granted living in the Canary Islands.

I finally decided on this one from Philips, because it is well priced, has good spare parts and is visually aesthetic. Plus, it fits under the faucet and not on the shower head. I find this super convenient, because if you want to shower with the shower head in your hand, it doesn't add extra weight.
Install a shower filter in 5 minutes
The two filter nozzles are universal and fit all devices. You just have to screw the upper part into the water outlet and the lower part into the tube that leads the water to the shower head. It literally takes five minutes and you don't have to use Teflon or a wrench: not a drop comes out, it looks custom-made.
The result is elegant, because it is the same silver color and seems to be part of the same mechanism. Additionally, if you have black or matte white faucets that are so fashionable now in decoration, Philips has the same filter in black and white.
Can you notice the difference in the hair?
Lot. Hair feels softer to the touch, has regained shine and stays clean for longer. It's not like returning to the capital, but the improvement is worth a lot. In fact, I normally use a product for wavy hair, but this time I decided not to use it so I could show the result without a filter and with a filter in a more faithful and real way. I'm happy.

Now, let's see how long the filter lasts before having to replace it. In principle, the brand promises that it will last four to six months, but until you see it, don't believe it. I hope so, because 25 euros a year to have great hair again is something I pay through the nose. I will update this article when that time has passed and I can see firsthand the real life of the cartridge.
