Jesús Serrano, makeup artist: “Over the age of 50, shiny eye shadows make you look older”

Over the years, the skin loses firmness and elasticity, and this is not only reflected in the facial oval, but also the eyelids lose firmness and take on a more droopy appearance. Precisely for this reason, there are makeup techniques that focus on lifting the drooping eyelid with strategic eyeliner or with shadows applied in the correct points.

Now, if we talk about shadows, not all of them work equally well and a fairly common mistake is not taking into account how their finish can influence rejuvenating the look. Shimmer shadows can be great allies when it comes to illuminating and refreshing the look, but when we refer to a drooping eyelid, things change.

In general terms, glitter shadows can be very interesting, but as makeup artist Jesús Serrano explains in this video, satin or iridescent shadows, when applied to a drooping eyelid, can have the opposite effect to what is desired. Therefore, choosing the application area and the amount of product well is essential to achieve a flattering finish.

“Shimmer shadows are super pretty, however, they are very treacherous,” says Serrano. Although as the expert indicates, using this type of shadows we can make the eyes look larger and more open, achieving a more rested look, he also points out that “do not do complete makeup with this type of shadows because it will have the opposite effect.”

If we apply bright shadows above the eyelid, instead of correcting it, the eyelid will look even more droopy. This happens because light shadows draw attention to this area and accentuate its relief. Instead of hiding the drooping of the eyelid, glitter can make this effect more evident and the eyes will look more tired and heavy.

The shadows that Serrano does recommend are those that have a cream texture with a matte finish or a light satin touch, preferably in neutral and earthy tones. Thanks to their cream format, they blend easily and allow you to define the look in a subtle way, without giving too much prominence to the areas of the eyelid that you want to conceal.
