Brenda Tello, dermatologist: "If you need to wash your hair every day and you don't, your hair can become dull, dry, dull, thick, heavy and prone to frizz."

There are people who fear washing their hair because they associate it with greater hair loss. But dermatologist Brenda Tello has explained on her social networks that: “There is no dermatological evidence that says that washing your hair every day is bad. On the contrary, it is a positive thing.”

Washing your hair is essential in personal hygiene, and that doesn't mean it will fall out more. Keeping the scalp clean is good for your health, it prevents the accumulation of sebum, dead cells or residue from hair products. The problem is that there are people who treat the scalp and hair fiber the same, when in reality they have different needs.

Wash hair daily

According to the dermatologist, “daily hair washing is recommended for anyone who feels good about that level of cleanliness and hygiene. But also for people who have oily scalps, seborrheic dermatitis, or people who sweat a lot,” says the expert.

In this sense, Tello highlights that people who wear helmets or caps a lot, play sports or live in cities with a lot of pollution, will benefit a lot from daily washing. The important thing here, as the expert highlights, is to use a good shampoo to clean the scalp well. “The skin in this area, like the skin in other parts, is exposed to pollution, product residues, our own oil… that is why we must clean it more constantly,” he says.

Furthermore, something very important that the professional comments on is that those people who are battling hair loss, “if they do not follow good scalp hygiene, they may not have a good response to the treatment or inflammation may occur, and more hair may fall out.”

What happens if you don't wash your hair frequently

When there is not good hair hygiene, hair health suffers, especially if the scalp is oily. “If you do need to wash your hair every day, if you don't it can worsen the layering and seborrheic dermatitis,” says Tello.

The dermatologist highlights that there are girls who do not want to wash their hair to preserve the dye for longer, and in these cases the expert says that we must weigh whether it is better to have a good scalp or to preserve the dye. It also refers to girls curly that give more importance to the hair strand and neglect the scalp more. So, what the expert points out is that “we must be balanced and not sacrifice the health of the scalp to take care of the rest, but rather find a way to make everything okay,” she says.

What can happen if you don't wash your hair every time is that the dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis gets worse. Furthermore, as the dermatologist says, “another problem that we can encounter is folliculitis due to occlusion and capillary debris, due to lack of cleanliness,” she points out. But not only that, but when our scalp skin is dirty, the malassezia fungus increases, which begins to generate problems such as inflammation, and can secondary contribute to hair loss.

The myth of hair loss and daily washing

This hair myth is one of the most widespread and throughout our lives we have heard it many times. There are many experts who have denied it, and Brenda Tello too. The doctor comments that “the reality is that when we wash, our hair does fall out, because it is normal to lose 100 to 150 hairs more or less every day. If you don't wash your hair for 2 days, the accumulated hair from 2 days will fall out; if you don't wash it in 5 days, the accumulated hair from those days will fall out and you will be very scared because you will see too many hairs all the time.” The dermatologist clarifies that these hairs are going to fall out anyway, because they are no longer anchored and will end up falling out to make way for new hair.

Nor should we worry that hair washing will eliminate the natural oils it generates, since as Tello says, these oils are constantly generated by the scalp. Furthermore, “the oils we produce in and of themselves are not going to reach the ends. That is why it is important to use a good conditioner, a styling cream and masks,” he points out.
