Andrea Combalia, dermatologist: "As dermatologists, there are presentations of sun creams that we like best to reapply during the day, such as sprays."

Protecting ourselves from the sun is not negotiable, it must be done no matter what time of year it is. But obviously during the summer we expose ourselves more intensely and that is why sunscreen is essential to avoid all harmful damage from the sun. From skin cancer to photoaging, this is why most dermatologists agree that sunscreen is the best anti-aging product.

In Cristina Miter's podcast about sun protection, the dermatologist and author of the book 'Healthy skin in healthy corps' Andrea Combalia wanted to clarify those very general doubts that people usually have when choosing sun cream. In recent years we have seen how many women opt for tinted makeup or creams that incorporate SPF to achieve protection and a good-looking effect in the same gesture.

But according to the expert, “it is important to comment on the difference between cosmetics with sunscreen and sunscreens that are cosmetic, which are increasingly pleasant. Because many times we find makeup that may have SPF 50 or face creams that have SPF 30. And in these cases it is true that they are protecting us against UV radiation but only b,” explains the dermatologist.

What happens is that there are cosmetics that “in many cases do not incorporate the high UVA spectrum or infrared light, and therefore makeup with SPF 50 is not the same, because in many cases it will only protect us against UVB radiation, not a tinted sunscreen that gives us a makeup effect but that is broad spectrum,” insists the expert.

The problem is that many makeup bases or moisturizing creams with sunscreen only declare protection against UVB radiation (which causes direct burning). A true broad-spectrum sunscreen with color, in addition to providing aesthetic coverage, guarantees by regulation protection against UVA radiation (responsible for loss of firmness, deep wrinkles and spots), infrared light and blue light. This means that the ideal is to opt for cosmetics that really protect against UVB, UVA and IR rays.

Current sunscreens are much more effective and have different textures.

The current market regarding sun creams offers us a great variety. There is no longer just one type of sun cream with a single texture. “Currently we find photoprotectors that are non-comedogenic, that are suitable for oily skin, others that are more moisturizing, for dry skin, for sensitive skin,” says Combalia.

For this reason, the expert points out that facial sunscreens are experiencing a brutal change, the technology and innovation in this sense is spectacular.

Textures are undoubtedly part of this change, there are fluid, creamy, oilier textures… “but as dermatologists there are presentations that we like better to reapply during the day such as sprays and in the event that you cannot reapply, then creams that are increasingly fluid are better,” says the dermatologist.
