Álvaro Fernández, pharmacist: “Water alone can remove some of the dust and dirt, but it does not clean the scalp well”

Personal hygiene is very important, not only because it makes you feel good and fresh but because it is essential to maintain healthy skin. In the case of hair, there is still debate about whether it is good to wash your hair frequently or not. But experts insist, washing your hair even every day is not bad nor does it make your hair fall out more, that is just a myth.

Pharmacist Álvaro Fernández, from his Instagram account, commented that: “Water alone can carry away some of the dust and dirt, but it does not clean the scalp well…”.

Washing your hair frequently and even every day if necessary is not only harmful, but can be very beneficial. Pharmacist Helena Rodero insists whenever she can on the importance of washing the scalp well: “We should wash as frequently as our scalp needs. If you have an oily scalp, you should wash every day. And if, for example, you have washed in the morning and go to the gym in the afternoon, you should wash it again,” highlights the expert.

On the other hand, the pharmacist goes on to say that washing hair with just hot water is not enough. “Putting the water hotter does not solve it. In fact, if it is too hot it can irritate the scalp, dry out the fiber and promote frizz,” explains Álvaro.

For a good cleansing of the scalp, what is needed beyond removing traces of dust or sweat is to eliminate oil. As the professional says, water alone does not have the ability to eliminate that fat, since “it does not emulsify the natural fat produced by the scalp,” says the pharmacist.

“Normally what the scalp has is sebum and sebum is fat, and water alone does not wash it away. Shampoo contains surfactants, molecules that bind to that fat and allow it to be eliminated when rinsing. So no, using shampoo is not the same as not using it,” highlights Fernández.

For this reason, it is necessary to use shampoo and also warm-hot water (not hot). The solution is not to stop using shampoo, but to choose the right product. Currently we find very respectful formulas, with mild surfactants that respect the skin barrier and clean the scalp without irritating.
