Alberto Cerdán, hairdresser: "There are thicker, more resistant gray hairs with closed cuticles. Those need specific formulas"

Although many women have decided not to be slaves to dyes and show off their gray hair naturally, there are also those who prefer to cover it and wear hair more in line with their natural color. For this, comprehensive coloring is perfect, but it seems to be taking a backseat, and new techniques that integrate gray hair have gained a lot of strength.

But if there is something about gray hair that we should know, it is that dyeing it is not as easy as we may think, which is why many dyes add the famous phrase: “100% gray coverage.” This happens because white gray hair is stiffer and lacks pigment. In this sense, the one who has a lot to say is the hairdresser Alberto Cerdán, and in an interview for Telva magazine, he has made it very clear how to take care of them and dye them so that they look beautiful.

For example, those who decide to cover their gray hair at home often make a very common mistake, and that is choosing “a dye color that is too dark because it leaves the hair transparent white or greenish,” says the expert. Furthermore, not all gray hair is the same “There are thicker, more resistant gray hairs with closed cuticles. These require specific formulas, more time or pre-pigmentation techniques,” says Alberto.

Regarding how often you should wash gray or dyed hair, Cerdán clarifies that “the ideal is to wash your hair every 2 or 3 days and if you can space out the wash a few more days using appropriate products, the better.” This is because dyed or gray hair is drier and appreciates less washing.

We also cannot forget that gray hair today is no longer hidden like before, in fact, there are many celebrities who have opted to show off their white or gray hair. Of course, they are very careful hair, because for them to look beautiful there must always be good work behind them.

Without Title

“Today gray hair is designed, it is not simply covered. We can opt for well-toned silver gray hair, in cold grays, luminous whites or even mix them with beige or pearl reflections,” emphasizes Cerdán. To achieve such wonderful results and make the hair look elegant and cared for, techniques such as “silver blonde, gray blending or soft highlights” are perfect, adds the expert.

Obviously everything will depend on the tastes of each person but it is true that in some cases, it is recommended to dye the gray hair and in other cases you can work with different techniques to integrate the gray hair and achieve very natural results. “I recommend dyeing when gray hair causes discomfort or a very harsh contrast. On the other hand, the natural transition works very well when it is accompanied: lightening the color, softening the roots and taking great care of the tone. I never recommend “stopping dyeing” without a strategy,” comments the expert.
