With views out to the harbour and surrounded by native bush, Mt Vernon is perfectly poised to allow
guests the opportunity to host an event, enjoy all that Akaroa has to offer, or to simply sit back and relax.
Meditative breathing seems instinctive when standing on the deck at the Lodge of Mt Vernon. Long slow breaths that allow the mind and body to soak in the water of the harbour glistening through the trees and the birdsong of tūī and bellbird (and the morepork at night). It is a destination that ignites an instant sense of calm and relaxation.
The large reception lawn that spreads out in front of the Lodge is ideally placed for gatherings of large groups, and it is easy to see why Mt Vernon has become such a sought-after destination for weddings and functions.
For hosts and owners David and Amanda Kinnaird, Mt Vernon is also a way of life. Having purchased the business eight years ago, it was the opportunity they were looking for after 30 years in the tourism industry (David as a tour driver and Amanda in hotels). ‘We hadn’t actually been to Akaroa before,’ laughs David, ‘but we came, had a look and never left!’
Captivated, like their guests, by the surrounds, David and Amanda knew this was their next step and haven’t looked back. Building on the past success of the business, they have enhanced and redesigned the buildings, establishing a modern, functional events space and holiday destination. Able to sleep 52 people across the Lodge and surrounding cabins, it is a versatile property that caters for everything from a romantic getaway to large groups, with guests often not realising the true value until they are there. ‘We want to keep the costs low for our visitors,’ says David. ‘But we don’t allow that to impact our quality. It is about ensuring we are able to open our retreat up to everyone.
‘We are here to look after our guests,’ he continues. ‘While weddings are a big part of what we do, the function room is well set up with AV requirements for conferences and retreats, while the Lodge and the gardens are well designed for large gatherings and family reunions.’
At the heart of the property the Lodge is a central hub with an expansive deck for socialising, a full kitchen and a central fire pit for cooler nights. ‘It is cosy in the winter and able to be fully opened up in the summer,’ enthuses David. It is a beautiful space in which to congregate, gather and connect with friends and family.
While David is often found front of house, talking to guests and cooking the barbecue, it is Amanda who makes the amazing accompaniments and provides guidance for those who have opted to have their catering provided. He laughs as he explains it is really Amanda ‘who runs the lodge’, and who takes great pride in maintaining the impressive gardens and vegetable beds. Set on six hectares, the garden comprises almost half, and maintaining it is no small task.
Despite being an unknown destination to many, it comes as no surprise that once people do visit they quickly become repeat customers. ‘Every visitor is unique and we enjoy getting to know each and every one of them,’ concludes David. ‘Being part of special moments and interacting with people from all around the world is one of the best parts of what we have achieved.’
