It is the most underrated town in Spain and no one ever sets foot in it, but travel experts compare it to Edinburgh

It seems incredible that a town as authentic, beautiful and traditional as Benasque is not on everyone's lips. Perhaps the fault lies in its location, surrounded by reddish and autumnal forests and with the Aneto as a backdrop, in the heart of the Pyrenees of Huesca. Getting there is not easy, but its mysterious, cloudy atmosphere and centuries-old stone facades are reminiscent of Edinburgh itself.

What to see in Benasque, Huesca

Benasque is a mountain town next to ski slopes and the nickname “Hidden Valley”, whose historic center is tiny and full of monumental buildings. An example is the Palace of the Counts of Ribagorza, with a robust, Renaissance stone façade and arched entrances. Nearby is the Casa Juste from 1567, with its imposing crenellated tower 18 meters high.

Like any good Spanish town, the church in the middle of the town cannot be missing. In this case it is dedicated to Santa María la Mayor and is a thousand years old. Although it has been renovated several times, it retains all its historical charm with that feeling of having been stuck in the past.

The cold and the hikes in the mountains make you very hungry, but in Benasque they know how to take care of it. Its typical dish is recau, a traditional vegetable-based stew. They also stand out in their meat stews and spoon creams, all of them perfect to warm up and regain strength. We can enjoy them at La Parrilla, a family restaurant with traditional decoration and cuisine, which has a delicious daily menu.

Benasque is in the center of the Posets-Madaleta Natural Park, with many peaks around it that exceed 3000 meters in height. In its surroundings there are lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, beautiful forests in autumn, mountains and many hiking routes to discover it all. The truth is that this is the best plan, because its nature is of incomparable beauty. Come on, I would love Edinburgh.
