In a remote place in Cádiz whose location seems invented (a rock crowned by a thousand-year-old castle and an inland beach) stands, white and proud, Zahara de la Sierra. Its whitewashed houses, its impossible slopes and its iconic meatballs have crowned it as one of the best autumn getaways, one of those that you have to discover slowly and soaking up all its Cádiz calm.
What to see in Zahara de la Sierra, Cádiz
Zahara de la Sierra is seen twice, because the entire white town is reflected in the reservoir, with its calm and turquoise waters offering a beautiful picture. The silhouette of the town stands out against the green background in spring and ocher in autumn of the Grazalema mountain range, with its stepped construction hanging from the cliff, which has been crowned by its castle since the 13th century.

The sloping mansions with pristine walls are so well cared for that they look like they have just been painted, but in reality they were built between the 16th and 17th centuries. All of them lead, between charming squares and flowery balconies, to the fortress, with a Nasrid Tribute tower in perfect condition, which can be accessed for free to see the entire surroundings of Zahara de la Sierra.

The castle is a heritage treasure, but it has competition. The church of Santa María de la Mesa is an impressive baroque temple, built 400 years ago and with a main carved wooden altarpiece loaded with decorative details. The square in front is ideal to sit and have a drink and enjoy the views of the temple façade, with the rock walls as a backdrop.

The gastronomy of Zahara de la Sierra is based on local mountain products, such as asparagus stews, chard with chickpeas, quince or tomato soup. However, its star dish is the meatballs, considered the best in Spain. They are prepared in wine or almond sauce, sautéed with vegetables or baked in clay bowls with cumin, coriander and cinnamon, Arabic style. You can try them at El Cortijo de Zahara de la Sierra.

At the foot of the town is the Arroyomolinos recreational area, an artificial beach next to the reservoir that fills up in summer. However, in autumn and winter it is ideal for taking a walk in nature and admiring the entire orange-tinged mountain range. From here there are several hiking routes through the Natural Park, for quiet walks and to disconnect from the stress of the city.
