This town in Córdoba emerges from a reservoir like a mountain and is perfect to visit in spring

One of the towns that reaches its maximum splendor in May is Iznájar, in Córdoba. This town, which emerges from the waters of the largest reservoir in the region, blooms during spring, the perfect time to enjoy its particular cuisine.

According to 'National Geographic' magazine, “beyond the fact that it is one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, Iznájar is a rural whim that during May is dedicated to demonstrating it between its balconies and its reservoir.”

This town is located in the extreme south of Córdoba, about 100 kilometers from the capital, it is in the heart of Andalusia. In fact, it is the last municipality in the south of the province, at the vertex with the provinces of Granada and Málaga. In addition to this, it sits on the ridge of a hill above the Priego stream and the Genil river. The latter runs here along its middle channel forming the Iznájar reservoir, which is the largest in Andalusia.

The fact of being on top of a hill and surrounded by the waters of the reservoir that bears its name, turns this town into a peninsula that is joined to the land by two bridges: the Agromán and the Fernández, access routes for those who visit it from the north or the south.

Iznájar, in turn, has nineteen scattered villages, making this town a territory rich in customs, traditions and a privileged enclave for its natural, cultural and heritage wealth.

In addition, it offers much more to do than stroll through its streets, squares, corners and villages of white houses decorated with colorful flowers. It is essential to visit the Villa neighborhood, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with its Nasrid Castle (built in the 8th century). Also, the Parroquia de Santiago or the Patio de las Comedias, as well as enjoying the views from the numerous viewpoints of the reservoir, or the sunsets from Valdearenas beach.

The most adventurous, on the other hand, can practice water sports, hiking or cycling around Lake Andalusia (the largest in the entire Autonomous Community). And, those who describe themselves as foodies, will enjoy tasting its delicious cuisine (special mention for the salmorejo and the fried eggs). There are more than 130 tourist accommodations spread throughout the extensive municipal area, so it may be worth spending the night to disconnect and enjoy Iznájar in its entirety.
