Genalguacil complies with all checks of a white town in the Serranía de Ronda: whitewashed houses, reddish roofs and steep alleys that validate leg day at the gym. However, it is enough to start walking for something else to stand out on the postcard. A sculpture stands out from a façade, a figure appears on a roof and a trunk located in the middle of a square turns out to be a work of art. The museum here is not visited in a building but rather occupies the entire town.
This small town in Malaga, with just 390 inhabitants, is located in the Genal Valley, surrounded by chestnut trees, cork oaks and fir trees. Since 2021 it has been part of The Most Beautiful Towns in Spain, although its streets have not become known only for preserving traditional Andalusian architecture. Genalguacil has been using art for more than three decades to try something as ambitious as not disappearing.

The museum that occupies the entire town
It all started in 1994 with the first edition of the Genal Valley Art Meetings. The idea was to invite different artists to live and work in the municipality for several weeks. In exchange, the works created there were later linked to the town. Some went on display in the museum and others were installed directly in its streets, squares, facades and roofs.
That initiative continues to be celebrated more than 30 years later. In fact, its eighteenth edition took place in August 2026, in which the artists once again developed their projects with the collaboration of neighbors. This local involvement is an important part of the project because the pieces dialogue with the landscape and with those who live there.

The result is discovered when walking the streets, when without having to follow a specific route, murals, mosaics, sculptures, photographs, intervened banks and even house numbers transformed into small creations appear. Some works are immediately recognizable and others are camouflaged so well among the houses that one can pass by and only notice several steps later. One of the most popular pieces is titled 'Hasta el moño de tan Cost' and represents an old woman carrying a basket.
What to see in Genalguacil
The best way to get to know it is to leisurely walk through its network of white streets from the Plaza de la Constitución, one of its main meeting points. Next to it is the church of San Pedro Martir de Verona, built in the 16th century and later rebuilt after suffering damage during the Moorish rebellion.

The Fernando Centeno López Museum of Contemporary Art is also worth a visit, where the works created during the Art Meetings are preserved that, due to their materials or characteristics, cannot remain outdoors. Its rooms complete what is seen outside.
In addition to looking for street art interventions, it is worth looking out at the viewpoints overlooking the Genal Valley and taking a look at the traditional architecture. The town center preserves the irregular layout typical of its Andalusian past, with narrow streets that adapt to the slope. Even the name Genalguacil comes from Arabic and is usually translated as “the vizier's gardens”, something that is understood when you contemplate the landscape that surrounds it.

Where to eat in Genalguacil
The range of bars and restaurants is limited, as is normal in a municipality of this size. However, one of the most popular options in the area is Venta Las Cruces, a family establishment located on the access road to the town and converted into one of the gastronomic classics of the Genal Valley. Its proposal revolves around traditional cuisine and strong dishes for sale, especially meats and recipes typical of the mountains.
In the urban area there are also small bars and rural accommodations such as Jardines del Visir. The gastronomy, which shares the same flavors with the rest of the valley, stands out for the dishes made with chestnuts, stews, sausages and game meats.

What to do around Genalguacil
Art is not the only reason to travel here. The municipality extends between the Genal River and the Sierra Bermeja mountains, a landscape marked by chestnut, pine and cork oak forests. The Spanish fir also grows in this area, a species of fir that has survived only in some mountainous enclaves in the south of the peninsula.
Several marked routes of the road network that crosses the municipality start from the town. One of them connects Genalguacil with Jubrique, while others go towards Los Reales or the Prado de la Escribana, next to the Genal River. Although it is also worth visiting the Almárchar river in summer.

In autumn, when the chestnut trees change color, the entire Genal Valley transforms into the so-called Copper Forest. It is probably the most spectacular time to visit the area, although Genalguacil does not need to wait for any specific season to arrive to be peculiar. Few towns can boast of having turned a solution against rural exodus into their greatest tourist attraction. Much less having a museum so large that it doesn't even close at night.
