There is a port in the Sierra de Madrid that is one of those that accumulates the most snow and is perfect for going with children.

At first, the idea of starting the year with a storm may not sound very attractive… However, it's all a matter of perspective because it can also be the perfect opportunity to start 2026 breathing fresh air, stepping on a blanket of freshly fallen snow and letting the children get really tired playing with it. Seen this way, it is a great plan. Above all, for those who know that there is a place in the Sierra de Guadarrama that never fails to enjoy the snow: Puerto de la Morcuera.

It is a place that is close to Madrid, it is one of the ports where the most snow accumulates and the best of all is that it remains a relatively virgin place to enjoy winter nature. La Morcuera is reached by going up from Rascafría on the M-611, the road that connects the Lozoya valley with Miraflores de la Sierra. A journey that is already part of the experience thanks to its curves, the views of the forest and that feeling of leaving the city behind little by little.

Once at the top, in the middle of the port, there is a large paved esplanade where you can leave the car, which makes it a comfortable place to go with children and sleds. In addition, before the final climb, near the Morcuera refuge, there is also a smaller parking lot. It is a fairly busy port so, to find a place in the morning, you have to get up early. Although another strip where it is easier to find parking is to go after eating.

We said about sledding because the Morcuera pass offers many wide, clear slopes to jump without fear of crashing into a tree. Of course, always with care and common sense, in addition to avoiding the north face because it is usually frozen.

Despite being a popular place to enjoy the snow, the environment continues to convey calm without a feeling of crowding, far from the atmosphere of a ski resort. Although, in the same way, it must be taken into account that there are no slopes here, no bars, nor shops to rent sleds or rackets. It is a very natural, almost wild place.

However, it is for all these reasons that it is the ideal place for those who are just looking to spend a few hours in the snow, make a doll, jump down the slope or simply walk along that white blanket that creaks in such an ASMR way under your feet. Although, for those looking for a bit of activity, it is also the starting point for hiking routes, such as the climb to Najarra, which offers spectacular views when the landscape is white.

Obviously, the cold is another very important factor to take into account. The port is an open and very exposed place, where the thermal sensation plummets when the wind blows. Therefore, you must be well equipped with waterproof outerwear.

Although the Morcuera port is an ideal place to go to spend half a day, it is also a destination that can easily be converted into a getaway for the weekend or while the snow lasts. The rural accommodations in the surrounding mountain towns guarantee a few days of relaxation with no other intention than to enjoy the snowy landscape and outdoor activity.

The reality is that you rarely have to go very far or have to get on a chairlift to make winter worth it and turn it into the best of memories. You just have to get up a little early, load the car and let the Madrid mountains do their magic.
