The small town of León where you can eat the best trout in Spain, after a route between chestnut trees and pools dug into the rock

Posted on 8 October 2026

In San Facundo, the river is the protagonist even at meal time. In the garden of the Hermanos Vila restaurant, a ditch runs through the outdoor dining room between fruit trees. A little further on is the town's river beach and, going up the valley, a path that leads to pools dug into the rock. In this way, the Argutorio water links the different parts of the getaway, from the restaurant menu to the mountain trails.

This small town in the municipality of Torre del Bierzo, in León, has found in its landscape a way to exist in the future. Its recent history includes renovated streets, buried cables and the recovery of spaces next to the river. Behind it is the work of the neighborhood council and a commitment to nature tourism after a past linked to the countryside and mining.

For an autumn getaway, the interest is above all in combining a visit to the town with routes through the surrounding forest. The chestnut trees, oaks and riverside trees allow you to take a route in which you can delight in the changing of the leaves. It is worth setting aside time to walk because it is a place where a good part of the visit continues where the houses end.

What to see in San Facundo

One of the peculiarities of the town will not be found above your head because the power lines are buried. It is an unusual intervention in a town of this size and is part of a set of improvements that also included the water supply, the road and neighborhood services. San Facundo offers a very careful image that hides behind works and neighborhood decisions, and that is complemented by the landscape that surrounds it.

The river beach is one of the points where you have to stop no matter what. Located next to the Argutorio, it has a bathroom and changing room area. In summer it adds the possibility of spending the day by the water, but at any time of the year it is a first stop before following the valley towards the forest.

The town's relationship with this place goes back much further. The origin of San Facundo is linked to a medieval monastery dedicated to the saint after whom it is named, of which there are no remains. It is advisable to know this past, despite this, because it is still interesting to understand how the valley was populated and the presence that the religious communities had in these places.

There was also Roman mining activity. Above all, in a quartzite gorge where gold was searched for more than two thousand years ago. It is another of the stories that accompanies the surrounding landscape: the slopes and paths preserve traces of different uses of the territory, from mining operations to monastic settlements.

Where to eat delicious and cheap in San Facundo

Trout has its own special place in San Facundo, where a Gastronomic and Cultural Meeting dedicated to this fish is held annually. It has brought together up to 400 diners around the table, including neighbors, visitors and representatives from the world of culture and gastronomy. He even gives out his own Golden Trout. Created in 2023, the award recognizes those who contribute to making El Bierzo and, especially, this small town known. Gastronomy is an important part of its commitment to attract visitors from outside the valley and keep the town alive.

El Bierzo is full of spectacular corners, charming towns and places that surprise you when you discover them. ✨ But there are places that deserve a special mention… and San Facundo is one of them. 💚 Known by many as the Oasis of Bierzo, this small town stands out for the constant sound of water, its natural environment, its river beach in summer, its hiking routes to Matavenero and the care with which every corner is taken care of. 🌿💧 In addition, San Facundo has also become famous for its Trout Cultural and Gastronomic Meeting, an already consolidated event that brings together hundreds of people every year and puts the town on the map thanks to gastronomy, culture and tradition. 🎣🍽️ And that doesn't happen by chance. Behind it there are people who believe in their land and work for it. Its mayor is an example of how to truly invest in rural tourism, take care of a town and turn it into a destination for thousands of visitors each year. 👏 I wish more places understood that the future also involves valuing what we already have: nature, authenticity, gastronomy and unique towns. 🙌 If you visit El Bierzo, write down this name: San Facundo 📍 Did you know him? 👇 #SanFacundo #ElBierzo #TurismoRural #PueblosConEncanto #QuéSeeEnElBierzo

To discover the gastronomic aspect of San Facundo, the stop is the Hermanos Restaurant-Bar, on Iglesia Street. A pilgrimage destination for foodies, its specialties are trout (obviously), but also eels. In addition, it has both an indoor dining room and a garden with fruit trees, nurseries and direct access to the river beach. It is always a simple luxury to accompany a good dish with the presence of water and vegetation.

What to do around San Facundo

The excursion that best extends the visit, before or after eating, follows the Argutorio towards the Pozo de las Ollas and Poibueno. The postcard is that of a river wedged between rocky slopes with holm oaks and oaks, while the riverside vegetation occupies the bottom of the valley. Chestnut and walnut trees also appear near the towns.

The Pozo de las Ollas, also called Pozo de las Hoyas, is one of its highlights along the way. The water makes its way through the rock, forming cavities and jumps in a narrow section of the channel. although, yes, it must be contemplated from the path, without abandoning it to get closer.

To organize this walk you can choose between several itineraries. For the most experienced and adventurous, there is a 14-kilometer route, with unevenness and medium difficulty that takes about five hours. It connects with the ecovillages of Matavenero and Poibueno through the high areas and returns along the river.

However, you can also get from San Facundo to Poibueno by following the Argutorio River and returning on your own steps. In addition, from Poibueno you can also continue towards the eco-town of Matavenero, with a climb of approximately one and a half kilometers.

Matavenero has more houses than Poibueno and adds another story of repopulation to the excursion. The community project was born in 1989, promoted by people from the Rainbow movement who settled in an abandoned valley. Its proposal is based on life in contact with nature, the search for self-sufficiency and the care of common spaces. Wind and solar energy, wood oven, organic farming, beekeeping, crafts, use of natural resources and the assembly organization are now part of their way of inhabiting the place.

The visit requires taking into account that it is an inhabited town and that the community asks to respect private areas and take charge of the waste that tourists may generate. In addition, it must be taken into account that the place does not have a store or restaurant services. In other words: if the walk is going to be long, you have to take food with you. The tour can end again in San Facundo, after learning about two different ways of keeping a town alive within the same valley.
