The ideal Christmas town for a family getaway without leaving Spain: affordable and with a unique charm

Posted on 17 December 2025

Let Zurich or the Swiss Alps stay away, because in Spain we have a town that comes to compete with them and the tourists have not yet found out. This is because it is very remote and hidden among the peaks of the Pyrenees, which in winter are filled with snow and turn this town into the most idyllic Christmas postcard that exists.

We are talking about Baguerge, the highest town in the Aran Valley. Located at 1,419 meters high, its barely 100 neighbors have managed to keep the charm and traditional slate and stone architecture of the area intact. In spring it is filled with people, who visit to see its famous flowers covering all the wooden balconies. However, when the snow arrives and silence sets in, Baguerge becomes more magical.

The slate roofs, stone facades and wooden balconies are covered in frost and the Christmas lights that decorate its alleys are reflected on the ground, covered in a blanket of pristine virgin snow. The air is cold and clean, silence fills everything and plans for a fireplace, a blanket and watching the snow fall through the window become the usual tone.

Church of Sant Feliu

Under the snow the walks are short and Baguerge is for it. It is a very small town with wonderful gems to discover: the 12th century Sant Feliu church of Romanesque origin is a spectacle, not to mention the Eth Corrau museum, ideal for discovering the history of the region.

In addition, we can venture out on a one-kilometer hiking route with snowshoes among white landscapes and reach the Hermitage of Santa Margalida. And if all else fails, eat cheese, the delicacy that this winter and Christmas wonderland boasts most about.
