The Cyclades are one of the greatest paradises that the Aegean Sea has to offer. Of all of them, Syros is one of the most beautiful, with its colorful buildings hanging over the turquoise water, its Mediterranean landscapes and its exquisite food. Can you believe you can move there for free? You just have to take care of stray kittens in exchange for room and board. Paradise, if you ask me.
This work is sponsored by the Syros Cats shelter, which offers volunteering with accommodation and breakfast included to anyone who wants to work five hours a day caring for the island's stray cats, five days a week. Its applications for 2027 open in September and the conditions are already published.
The shelter requires that you love cats, although if you have training, grooming, or veterinary experience all the better. You must be prepared to “get your hands dirty, be responsible, independent and punctual.” In addition, they require a minimum stay of one month on the island, that you be over 25 years old, have a good level of English and that you have no prejudices, since people from all over the world work there.
In exchange, they provide you with a private room in a shared house, with water, electricity and internet services covered. They also offer free breakfast, a free day to discover the beauty of Syros, and lots of cat love. They do not include transfers, other meals, travel insurance or personal expenses you have in Greece.
They also specify the planning of the day, so that you are very clear about what to expect in this job. The day is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., giving food and medication to stray cats, beach cats and cats kept in captivity. Their dishes, sandboxes, beds, cages and water containers also need to be picked up and cleaned. In addition, you have to monitor and record the health of the michis, clean the shelter area and the community kitchen, play and pamper the felines, garden and take photos for social networks.
If you add the beauty of Syros and a life surrounded by michis, it seems like a more than fair exchange to me.
