The beautiful town in Mexico where it is always spring: it is full of flowers and has Provençal charm

Posted on 9 March 2026

When we see the postcard of Atlixco it seems like a science fiction town, built on the slopes of Popocatépetl, an active volcano that continuously emits smoke. However, this colorful town is real and a beautiful weekend getaway. Located in the state of Puebla, its streets full of fruit trees, plants and flowers have given it the nickname 'Atlixco de las Flores'.

Visiting Atlixco is a great plan for all the senses. The explosion of colors on facades and markets is a visual pleasure and the typical cuisine of cecina, elotes, snacks and tlatloyos will make you salivate. But, in addition, all of this is seasoned with a soft floral perfume, which accompanies you throughout your stay.

In this small city founded in 1579 it is always spring and they have made this luck their hallmark. There are nurseries in every corner, a Magic Garden with gigantic floral sculptures and many events related to flowers, with a Provençal atmosphere. In fact, the Huey Atlixcayotl is celebrated here, a music and dance festival to thank Mother Earth with huge carpets of flowers.

Cerro de San Miguel is the soul of this town, located in the center and with spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset over the volcano. It is crowned by the Chapel of San Miguel, a charming yellow church from the 18th century built in a popular baroque style, very typical of colonial buildings.

To get there, you have to climb the impressive mural of the Danzantes Atlixcáyotl, created by Juan Manuel Martínez Caltenco. Right next door is Avenida Hidalgo, a beautiful street where all the houses and balconies are decorated with colors, flowers and joy.

A little further down is the Municipal Palace, a beautiful 17th century building that houses murals about the history of Atlixco. Right in front, the Parroquia Santa María de la Natividad, a majestic temple of the Spanish Renaissance.

Furthermore, on the outskirts of Atlixco there are several spas that take advantage of the medicinal and warm water of the volcano and that are a great plan to relax, disconnect and get away from the noise of the city. The perfect cherry on top for this floral and colorful visit.
