The bathing season begins: this tropical paradise with Caribbean vibes is in Spain, although it may not seem like it

Posted on 9 April 2026

After a rainy winter, the body asks us for a beach, walks along the shore, turquoise water and paradisiacal destinations at the end of the world. Like this islet, which looks like a sandbank in the middle of the Indian Ocean, but it is in Galicia and it is a unique and very exotic trip. Do you know this hidden paradise nicknamed the Galician Caribbean?

The Areoso Islet is a 600-meter piece of land protected in the Arousa estuary, in Pontevedra, due to its great historical and ecological value, because it is a breeding area for many birds such as the cormorant and the seagull. Access is limited, but we are going to tell you what to see and how to travel to this white sand dune with tropical vibes without leaving Spain.

This islet was not always an island. In the past it was linked to the Iberian Peninsula, which is why there are archaeological sites there: remains from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age ranging from dolmens and mamoas to ceramics, arrows and funerary structures with 4,000 years of history that were isolated with the rise in sea level.

To enter you need a free authorization, since there are limited daily places to protect this paradise. They are processed on this website with three time slots: from dawn to 1 p.m., from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to sunset. There you can bathe, walk, enjoy the views and disconnect, keeping everything clean and complying with the prohibitions.

You can get there by motor boat, without a motor or with anchor, but it is always prohibited to spend the night there or bring animals. The ideal is to go by kayak, because it does not make noise or leave waste: if you are going to disembark you need a permit, but if you only want to explore the coastline by sea it is not necessary.
