Rodrigo Chacón, baker: "Storing bread in a plastic bag is not recommended, as it encourages the appearance of microorganisms."

When we go to the bakery or supermarket and pick up a loaf or loaf, they always put it in a paper bag. There are those who, when they get home, put it in a cloth bag, and a priori it seems like the most optimal option to better preserve the bread. Well, it turns out that the experts do not agree with this and their favorite would be a plastic one.

We confess that this statement has left us somewhat confused, but it seems to be the most accurate, especially if we are not going to consume all the bread on the same day and this has a lot to do with humidity. This is how baker Rodrigo Chacón explained it in a video from his TikTok account that he shared with his followers.

The baker insists that plastic, unlike other materials such as paper or fabric, does not allow moisture to escape easily. This way the bread takes much longer to become hard and maintains its texture of a freshly made loaf and loaf. This is a trick that is especially useful for people who live alone and want their bread to last longer.

Of course, sometimes the bars and loaves of bread are so large that no matter how much we put them in a plastic bag, it is clear that if only one person is going to consume them, it is better to use the freezer. José Roldán, better known as the World Baker of the Year 2025 by the International Union of Bakers and Confectioners (UIBC), always recommends this tip. For this, the World Health Organization (WHO) points out -18 ºC as the reference temperature for the storage of frozen foods in order to maintain their quality and safety.

I confess that it is the trick I use the most since I love loaf bread, but of course it is a lot for one person. So at the bakery I ask them to slice the entire loaf and I freeze all the pieces so that little by little I can only take out the ones I'm going to consume. To do this, just take the frozen slice and put it in the oven for a few minutes, although a toaster or air fryer can also work.
