If there is a town that is well placed on the map and even better in the landscape, it is Sajazarra, in La Rioja Alta. A tiny fortified town surrounded by vineyards, with flat streets that make it perfect for forgetting about the car and exploring it on foot. Furthermore, it is a trip that almost always ends the same: with the smell of vine shoots and lamb fat in the air.
What to see in Sajazarra: historical stone, wall and unexpected art
Sajazarra is explored like someone leafing through a short book but full of highlights. Everything is close and nothing is left over. The heart of the town is its medieval complex: the wall still maintains its original layout and the access arch opens there, a door that seems more like a transition than an entrance.

From there, the cobbled streets lead towards two inevitable protagonists: the church of Santa María de la Asunción, of Romanesque origin with later layers that have been added by centuries of history, and the castle-palace, a 15th century fortress that today is private property and stands as a dominant (but discreet) presence among the houses. It cannot be visited inside, but its silhouette is enough as a symbol of the place.
The interesting thing is that, among so much historical stone, something completely unexpected appears: contemporary art integrated into the streets. Sculptures and modern pieces interrupt the medieval story (without breaking it), as if the town had actively decided not to freeze in the past. Walking through Sajazarra is, in that sense, an exercise in continuous contrast between the old and the recent, between the monumental and the everyday.
Where to eat delicious and cheap in Sajazarra: wine, grill and shoots
In Sajazarra you don't come to count calories, but to eat very well. The star dish is lamb chops with vine shoots, roasted with vine wood. More than a recipe it is a ritual. The sweet smoke of the vine permeates everything and elevates any meal to almost a religious experience.

Among the most common stops in the town and its surroundings are places such as Asador Ochavo, where the grill is the protagonist, or El Botero, with a menu focused on traditional Rioja cuisine and dishes designed to accompany wine without stealing the spotlight.
Bodega El Pimiento also stands out, where the link with the world of wine is even more direct and the experience is understood almost as an extension of the land itself. If you are looking for something simpler, one of those places where you eat well and quickly, Casa Marga is a popular option among those who visit the town. In Sajazarra, luxury is not sought in the complexity of the dish, but in the well-done grill.
What to do around Sajazarra: vineyards, trails and towns that are not forgotten
The surroundings of Sajazarra also deserve attention. The environment is part of the Natura 2000 Network, which already gives a clue of what awaits: vineyards, riverbanks, small forests and biodiversity. The trails are designed for leisurely walking, especially those that border the Oja and Tirón rivers, where the terrain opens up and the landscape breathes.

There are simple routes that connect the town with other towns in La Rioja Alta, ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle, crossing cereal fields and vineyards accompanied by silence and tranquility. On clear days, the sensation is that of being inside a postcard without a stamp.
Nearby, Haro is located as a natural stop for anyone who wants to continue exploring the wine culture, while other towns in the area also preserve that aesthetic of stone and flowered balconies so typical of the region. But without having to go far, just go a few minutes away from the town center to find paths where you can only hear the wind moving between the vines.
