Neither the Alps nor France: the best-lit town, perfect for a Christmas getaway, is in Spain

Posted on 25 January 2026

There is a charming small town 2 and a half hours from Madrid that is an elegant and traditional Christmas oasis. They have not lost their minds with impossible lighting or decoration kitch. Here they illuminate with good taste, enhancing the original beauty of the town. And, what's more, they have the most surprising Three Kings Parade of all.

Medina de Rioseco is a small town in Valladolid that goes quite unnoticed during the year. However, at Christmas the neighbors decorate all the streets, squares and corners. This includes its beautiful porticoed sidewalks with vertical columns, through which cascades of subtle golden lights fall that make the town more beautiful, but without taking away its prominence. As the streets are so narrow, the facades are linked with decorations that go from balcony to balcony.

But this festive town does not only live on beautiful lighting. They also have a beautiful Nativity scene route, which starts at the church of the Convent of San José and continues at the Town Hall, passing through several shop windows and establishments that put on their own original and different staging.

In addition, the town hall holds a Christmas market in the Casino, where we can find crafts, decorations, gifts, typical cuisine and sweets. Although if it's sweet, the ideal is to have a good hot chocolate with an Abyssinian, a typical bun from this town that is fried and filled with pastry cream and sprinkled sugar.

The little ones are the ones who will have the best time in Medina de Rioseco. For them there are games, inflatable beds, music, theater and children's workshops. In addition, the Three Kings Parade on January 5 is so iconic that it is considered a festival of regional tourist interest: the Three Wise Men arrive aboard a boat along the Canal of Castilla, with fireworks and magical projections on the facades. If you ask us, we will say that there is no better Christmas plan.
