While many celebrities go to Ibiza or Marbella, Pilar Rubio chooses a cheaper destination to spend her holidays, facing the quietest and most discreet Costa Blanca in the Mediterranean. She and her husband, Sergio Ramos, take advantage of their breaks to disconnect in Jávea, a charming town in Alicante far from the media spotlight, crowds and excess: here everything maintains the seafaring calm of yesteryear.
What to see in Jávea, Alicante
Jávea has it all. It has a beautiful historic center to walk aimlessly, full of whitewashed houses, flowering geraniums and lots of light. It also has beautiful beaches, secluded coves where time has stopped between fishermen's huts and a cuisine that is impossible to resist.
Its cobbled streets are trapped in a medieval past and several monuments give a good account of this. The church of San Bartolomé and its impressive Elizabethan Gothic architecture from the 15th century or the remains of the wall from the Middle Ages, which are still integrated into some homes on En Grenyó street and are a reminder of the pirate attacks that the town suffered in the past.
From here we go to the coast, to discover the fishing port of Jávea and its beautiful urban beach, with all the services and surrounded by exquisite restaurants and a very long Promenade. However, the town's true treasure is its coves. Spoiler: Put the crab pots in your suitcase because you are going to need them to be able to access the most incredible corners.
Portitxol cove, also known as Barraca cove, is the jewel in the crown. It is 900 meters long and is surrounded by cliffs and traditional fishermen's houses, which give it a very rustic and charming appearance. In front of it, the island of Portitxol emerges from the sea, ideal for diving among reefs and posidonia forests. Other charming coves are Sardinera or Granadella.
Where to eat cheap and delicious in Jávea, Alicante
Going to Jávea and not trying its seafood rice, its dried octopus, its fish stews or its red prawn would be a sin. We can try similar delicacies very cheaply at Bar Las Olas, with paellas at 14 euros per person; or at Restaurante Carrió, for 19 euros.
What to do near Jávea, Alicante
From the sanctuary of the Jerónimos de la Plana in Jávea there is a circular route of about 6.5 kilometers that takes you to the Cova Tallada, a cave on the coast that was a quarry in the past and which has now remained as a series of grottoes open to the sea in Cabo de San Antonio. Of course, at some times of the year you have to make a reservation in advance to visit it, which is free. The return is along the coast, with beautiful views of the Mediterranean.
