For months, tourists making pilgrimages to the National Palace of Mafra to enter its legendary library have been disappointed to find it closed and full of scaffolding. However, the conservation and restoration work has been completed and one of the most impressive cultural spaces in all of Portugal can once again be visited. In addition, now with better access and security conditions.
The Library of the National Palace of Mafra reopened its doors to visitors and researchers last Friday, January 9, after an intervention that aimed to protect and preserve a baroque heritage of exceptional value, and recognized both inside and outside the country.
It is no wonder because the library is part of a monumental complex ordered to be built in 1717 by King João V, a colossal work conceived to reflect the power and ambition of the Portuguese empire in the 18th century. In this way, the National Palace of Mafra is not a building, but a complete universe: royal palace, basilica, convent and library coexist in a complex that extends across tens of thousands of square meters and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2019.

A library that is not forgotten
Entering the Mafra library is a sensory experience. The space, with a cruciform plan and 88 meters long, impresses even before looking at the books. The floor combines pink, gray and white marble; Rococo shelves rise loaded with volumes bound in leather and gold; and natural light floods the space.
In its collections are preserved authentic bibliographical gems of history, such as a second edition of the epic poem 'The Lusiadas' (a masterpiece of literature in Portuguese) or a papal bull granted by Benedict insects that could damage books.
An international cultural excursion
Mafra is located just about 30 kilometers northwest of Lisbon, making it a perfect cultural getaway to do from Spain. From Madrid, the journey takes just over an hour and a half by plane to Lisbon and, from there, you have to go by road or public transport to the Portuguese town. Although you can also go directly by car from our country.

Beyond the library, the palace is also a privileged witness to history. It was a religious and educational center, the scene of key episodes such as the Peninsular Wars or the Carnation Revolution, and an outstanding example of the Roman and Italian baroque that João V wanted to import to leave his mark. Its two towers (one intended for the king and the other for Queen Maria Anne of Austria) are linked by a 232-meter gallery, considered the longest palace corridor in Europe.
Of course, it must be taken into account that the library can only be visited from Monday to Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free, but it is part of the visit to the Mafra National Palace, whose general price is around €15. However, don't let money stop you because it is an exceptional opportunity to Rediscover one of the most beautiful and unique cultural spaces in Europe, now restored and ready to dazzle again.
