The uncovering of the feet can bring many surprises, especially when they have not been paid much attention during the rest of the year. Something quite common is that the feet are dry and have cracks in the heels. But when these calluses are very deep, they can be quite frustrating until the skin is soft and smooth again.
Podiatrist Manu Vidal explains on his Instagram account (@podomanu) what we can do to treat dry heels and prevent them from cracking or getting worse. “It is a very common problem, especially in summer or if you wear inappropriate shoes.” Specifically, the expert focuses on three pieces of advice, which according to him, “really work.”
The first step to having healthy and beautiful feet is to maintain good hydration. In this sense, the expert speaks out loud and clear: “put on moisturizing cream and, if possible, have a high percentage of urea.” This gesture should be done daily and Vidal recommends Dermiurea 30% cream, one of his favorites, and clarifies that it is not advertising. He also recommends drinking enough water “to be hydrated both outside and inside,” says the podiatrist.
The second piece of advice is to go to a podiatrist if the cracks are very deep, so that the professional can remove the calluses, since “the layers of dry skin can cause cracks if they are not treated correctly.” Furthermore, when the skin is already so thickened or compacted, moisturizing creams cannot penetrate.
As a third piece of advice, the expert focuses on footwear, which is that, as Vidal points out, “worn shoes or those that are not suitable are going to favor those hardness and cracks in your heels,” he adds. Therefore, it is extremely important not to use shoes that have worn soles.
Taking care of the health of our feet is something we should do throughout the year, and not just now that we start wearing sandals. But as the expert indicates, in summer we cannot relax because the heels during this time of year tend to be hard if the appropriate footwear is not used.
