Many women continue to trust the Nivea cream in the blue can, and this cream stands out for its simplicity and for providing hydration that the skin greatly appreciates. But also, it is a very versatile cream and there are those who use it as a hair mask or to perform a facial massage and reduce wrinkles.
Its formula remains the same as always, and the brand has not altered its ingredients, which are: water, paraffin, wax, glycerin, lanolin and panthenol. Its ingredients are precisely what have made some experts not consider it an anti-aging cream, therefore it is not a cream that will treat wrinkles or sagging.
According to pharmacist Eva Fernández, on her social networks, the Nivea cream in a blue can “does moisturize, but because it is a hyper-occlusive cream.
It creates a film that prevents water from escaping,” he adds. In this same sense, chemist Vladimir Sánchez comments that thanks to liquid paraffin, it is a cream that “forms a protective layer that prevents moisture from escaping and preventing the skin from drying out,” says Sánchez.
Although it is a cream that many women use to treat wrinkles, experts are clear that it is not an anti-aging cream as such. “Its ingredients create a film and that's why they can make the skin look smoother, but that doesn't mean it treats wrinkles,” says Eva. Therefore, it must be clear that it is a cream that works especially as a moisturizer, but is not formulated to treat the signs of aging.
The expert clarifies that the traditional Nivea does not contain any active ingredient that has this function. As is the case with retinoids, collagen or peptides that do have an effect antiaging. For a product to improve skin elasticity or blur wrinkles, it must be able to stimulate the collagen found in the skin for the effects to be noticeable. Which means that Nivea does not stimulate the dermis, therefore this anti-aging function cannot be expected from it.
Now, what the pharmacist does recommend Nivea cream for is the driest areas of the body, such as the elbows, feet, heels or any dry area. “There, the Nivea cream is GOD. It nourishes, protects and repairs because it seals the skin,” says Fernández. Which means that it is perfect to treat those most rebellious and dehydrated areas of the body.
What the expert does emphasize is that she would never use this face cream since in addition to being comedogenic, it contains many possible allergens: limonene, linalool, geraniol, citronellol… and these ingredients “can irritate or cause a reaction on sensitive skin, around the mouth or on atopic skin,” adds Eva.
