It does not appear on any tourist route and that is precisely where all its charm lies. This medieval fishing village is perfectly nestled between cliffs that fall into the sea and its narrow streets on impossible slopes are proof of this. It is called Elantxobe and it has a port that is still active, impressive viewpoints and the most traditional and delicious Basque food. Pack your suitcase, because this is a trip.
What to see in Elantxobe, Vizcaya
Elantxobe is a medieval town that was built on the rugged coasts of the north of Vizcaya in the 16th century, protecting fishermen from the wind and waves between cliffs. The houses adapted to the steep terrain, being built in the shape of a cornice towards the sea and creating the effect that they hang over the rock wall.

The port is charming and small in size, but it captures all the traditional essence of the town and its whaling past. Life continues to revolve around this place, where fishermen fish and unload their catches of anchovy and northern albacore, with canning being one of the most cutting-edge industries in the town.

Near the port there is a natural pool, where locals and visitors take the opportunity to take a dip and compensate for the lack of a sandy beach on this rocky coast. It is protected from tides and waves and access is free.

The old town of Elantxobe is a labyrinth of steep and very narrow streets, with stone facades and wooden balconies to get lost in, enjoying the smell of saltpeter and the sea breeze. A walk here will take you to the Church of San Nicolás de Bari, a 19th century temple that looks out over the rooftops with its stone bell tower.
