Sensitive scalp is a fairly common condition that can affect both the well-being and health of your hair. It is characterized by greater reactivity of the skin to certain factors, such as changes in temperature, stress, pollution and even the use of inappropriate hair products. Therefore, you have to know how to choose products that respect the scalp and its natural balance.
One of the products that can cause sensitivity or irritation to the scalp is shampoo. As it is an essential element in our personal hygiene routine, it is important to choose one that adapts to the specific needs of our skin. An inappropriate choice can intensify the discomfort and aggravate the problem. The expert hairdresser Conchi Arias has expressed on her social networks that: “If you have a sensitive, irritated or very unbalanced scalp, the last thing you need is aggressive cleaning.”
We often think that symptoms such as itching, excess oil or peeling require more intense cleansing. However, the use of overly aggressive shampoos can alter the natural balance of the scalp and, far from improving these symptoms, contribute to their accentuation. “It's not always about cleaning more, but about cleaning better,” says the stylist.
When choosing a shampoo, you have to look for effective formulas that do not alter the scalp. One of the ingredients we should pay attention to is sulfates, because “strong sulfates can excessively remove the natural protection of a scalp if it is already a little sensitive,” clarifies Arias.
In this case, “when the scalp is already compromised, aggressive cleaning does not usually help: it can worsen the very thing you want to calm,” says the hairdresser. Therefore, it is appropriate to opt for formulas that have very mild treatment and sulfates, capable of cleansing the scalp without attacking it, respecting its skin barrier and helping to recover its balance. Its objective is to offer a gentle cleansing, adapted to the needs of skin that requires specific care. “Because when the root is altered, you don't need more aggression. You need treatment,” says Conchi.
