Experts agree: "To style frizzy hair, use soft air and do not place the dryer nozzle directly on the hair. This damages, dehydrates and causes frizz."

During autumn, hair tends to frizz more easily due to environmental humidity, rain and lower temperatures. But if your hair also arrives at this time of year dehydrated after the summer months, controlling frizz can be even more complicated. Hair loses shine, acquires a rougher texture and becomes difficult to manage. Added to these factors are the sudden changes in temperature between the outside and the heated spaces, as well as the static electricity generated by rubbing against clothing.

To combat frizz, experts insist on the importance of keeping hair well hydrated and paying special attention to the drying technique, since doing it incorrectly is one of the mistakes that most favors the appearance of frizz.

How to use the dryer to avoid frizz

Achieving a perfect finish for our hair is not an impossible mission, you just have to know how to listen to those who know the most and put it into practice. Surely we often overlook one of the most important details in controlling frizz: how to use the dryer.

The hairdresser and Rowenta ambassador Pablo Robledo explains to the publication Hello! that: “Directing air from the roots to the ends helps smooth the hair cuticle. The cuticle is the outer layer of the hair, and when you dry from the roots to the ends, the air acts more evenly and gently, reducing the frizz“says the expert.

Dermatologist Claudia Bernardez also insists on the importance of proper hair drying. From his social networks, he emphasizes that “drying can make or break your hair.” Most importantly, “use a good quality dryer that regulates the temperature well and has power in the air,” warns Bernardez.

But in addition to betting on a good tool, such as a dryer, he recommends not going overboard with the temperature, since “excessive heat opens the cuticle and leaves the hair more porous,” he insists. Another big mistake is drying in the opposite direction to the cuticle, the air should always go from the roots to the tips following the natural orientation of the cells, because the cuticle acts like a tile and if we lift it, the hair loses shine and frizz and fractures appear,” explains the dermatologist.

Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the technique we use when drying our hair and not do it improvisedly. As the expert warns, this step is essential to preserve the hair fiber, since inadequate drying can ruin the results of any other care routine, no matter how many products and treatments we use.

Using the towel correctly is essential

When it comes to using the towel, we tend to remove moisture from the hair in any way, without paying attention to the way we do it. However, this gesture can greatly influence the final result. Therefore, in addition to choosing the right tools, it is important to treat your hair carefully so as not to damage it.

But before the dryer, there is already a very common mistake that is very damaging to the hair. The hairdresser Ramón Santiago Ferna has explained on his social networks what not to do when we use the towel. “It is important to use microfiber towels that help our hair not to get frizzy,” he says. In addition, she points out the importance of “not rubbing with the towel, never, you just have to let the towel itself act,” explains Ferna.

Rubbing your hair with a towel to remove moisture is a common gesture that, however, can make frizz worse. As Santiago explains, this friction damages the cuticle, causing it to open and the hair to become more rebellious. Along the same lines, Robledo advises against this practice, since, as he warns, “it can aggravate frizz.” Therefore, it is best to remove excess water gently, pressing the towel on the hair without rubbing it.

How to style frizzy hair

Regarding the use of a dryer, many times we dry our hair without paying attention to the technique and then we wonder why we don't get the same finish as in the hairdresser. The key is choosing a suitable dryer and learning how to use it correctly. Only in this way can we achieve softer, shinier and more controlled hair, with a polished finish and no drop of frizz.

The hair stylist and Education Manager of Llongueras, Alberto Sanguino, has commented to the Magas publication that “the most common mistake when drying hair is placing the dryer nozzle directly on the hair. This damages, dehydrates and causes frizz,” he warns.

“Use a diffuser to distribute the air more gently and not cause friction. Additionally, you can apply products anti-frizz, such as creams or oils, to protect hair from heat damage and keep it hydrated,” advises Robledo.

In any case, with a diffuser or nozzle, you must maintain an adequate distance to avoid damaging the hair. “The ideal distance is 10 to 15 centimeters. If you place the nozzle directly on the hair, the heat burns the fiber, dehydrates it and opens the cuticle. In the long run, this generates frizz and lack of shine,” explains Sanguino.

The expert hairdresser Olga G San Bartolomé recommends on her TikTok account: “Blow the air from top to bottom and use a brush that aligns the cuticle,” she indicates. But the final touch that always adds up is to “finish with cold air to seal the cuticle and make the hairstyle last longer,” says the stylist.
