Located on a hill and just 50 kilometers from Valladolid, is a small and beautiful town that receives more than 45,000 tourists every year. It was the first Book Village in Spain in 2007 and is the perfect getaway for this fall.
Surrounded by a 12th century wall, we find a medieval town that can also boast of being one of the best preserved medieval towns in the province of Valladolid. We are talking about Urueña, a charming town with more bookstores than bars.

Urueña was declared a Historical-Artistic Site in 1975 and is one of those towns that seem frozen in time. The Castilian plateau can be seen from its 12th century walls that show that in the Middle Ages it was a key center in Castilla y León. It is a viewpoint from which we can observe the landscapes of Tierra de Campos.

The wall had two gates: the Azogue gate with a semicircular arch and the Villa Gate with a pointed arch. In addition, it has a castle that preserves the Torre del Homenaje and in the streets we can breathe that medieval air that we like so much.

The beautiful stone mansions and the Gothic-Renaissance parish church of Santa María del Azogue from the 16th century are essential stops in Urueña. But if we want to enjoy the beauty of the Romanesque we have to go a couple of kilometers away from the urban center and visit the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Anunciada, which dates back to the 11th century and is an example of Lombard Romanesque and one of the best preserved on the Castilian plateau.

Urueña, the town with barely 200 inhabitants and a dozen bookstores
In 1992, the Alcaraván bookstore opened in Ureña, the first in the town. Now it has 12 and is the first Book Village in Spain. In addition to being able to find old books among its streets, Urueña has numerous museums that make this town a cultural getaway.

Its Story Museum with a splendid collection of fold-out books; a museum of books and writing, the Miguel Delibes e-LEA Center; the Music Museum with more than a thousand instruments; the first Gramophone Museum in Spain; the Bell Museum with pieces from the 15th and 16th centuries; and the Ethnographic Museum located in the Casona del Mayorazgo.
