This is the most beautiful white town in Andalusia to visit in autumn, but tourists don't know it and go to Frigiliana

Posted on 3 September 2026

While all the tourists go to Frigiliana, generating unsustainable overcrowding for the town, this other town in Malaga remains authentic, charming and very quiet, surrounded by forests, mountains and eternal views of the horizon. Gaucín is one of the most beautiful white towns in Andalusia, but few people know that its best time is autumn.

What to see in Gaucín, Málaga

Gaucín is a jumble of whitewashed houses with a dazzling historic center, courtesy of all the cultures that have passed through there: Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Christians. The town, full of steep and labyrinthine streets, follows the slope of the hill that rises to 688 meters to the Águila Castle, a Roman fortress reinforced by the Arabs in the 11th century that crowns everything from the heights.

The grounds of this castle have the 17th century Hermitage of Santo Niño, the ruins of the old hospital and the towers of the Regent and the Queen, which still stand and protrude above the rock wall. In the old center itself we find the church of San Sebastián from 1487, with its beautiful Mudejar roof perfectly preserved.

We will also see the Fuente de los Seis Caños, an Andalusian baroque style from the 17th century, as well as hundreds of flowery streets with geraniums and bougainvilleas in bloom. These colors contrast with the white of the houses and the red of the forests in autumn, which the oranger light of this time of year makes shine in a warmer and more evocative way. Precisely for this reason, Gaucín burns in September and becomes even more precious.
