Suffering a burn is something most unpleasant and we quickly look for a remedy that can provide immediate relief. Among the most classic ingredients that many of us may have at home is aloe vera, since we know that it is a great active ingredient for treating minor burns or irritations.
Now, when we talk about having aloe vera, we are not always referring to a cosmetic cream but to the plant itself. It will not be the first or the last time that we hear about the number of good properties that the aloe vera plant has for skin healing, even to soothe and repair after a burn. But the problem is, as dermatologist Mariangeles Jofre (@mariamdermato) explains on Cristina Mitre's podcast, precisely using the product directly from the plant.
Aloe vera is a plant that produces a gel within its leaves, and it is precisely that natural product that some people apply directly to a wound or burn to relieve pain. But regarding this, the doctor has a lot to say.
Cutting a piece directly from the plant and putting it on the skin would not be the best idea, as Jofre explains. The reason has a very clear and logical explanation: “the biggest risk of this is that we have plants in the ground, and there are many bacteria and fungi, and by cutting it, we can introduce all those microorganisms inside the plant, and when we put the gel we can drag all those microorganisms to the skin,” explains the dermatologist.
What can happen is that if there is a wound on the skin, these microorganisms “end up causing infections that can be complicated to treat and can take up to many months of antibiotics,” comments the expert.
For this reason, Mariangeles insists that it would not be the best idea to use aloe vera. Although in general terms, the dermatologist does not recommend it; It does point out that it is not the same in healthy skin as in one that has “wounds and burns”, in this case it is better to avoid it.
