When we think about the diet of an elite footballer, it is easy to imagine that each dish responds to a measured nutritional strategy. However, Rodri Hernández acknowledges that, although he takes care of his diet, he is not “very meticulous with food” or “obsessive.” And there is one dish he turns to when he wants to treat himself, because it is his favorite food: sushi.
The captain of the Spanish team, 30 years old, has said that although as a child he did not pay much attention to this Japanese dish, and remembers that he even tried it without particularly liking it, over time his perception changed.
“When I've gotten older, the truth is that, of the best quality, the sushi is spectacular,” says the new Barça player. Of course, just because it is one of your favorite dishes does not mean that it is a regular part of your diet. Rodri explains that he does not usually eat sushi often and that he prefers to reserve it for those moments when he wants to enjoy a special meal.
“When I want to treat myself, I go to a sushi restaurant,” he explained in a net magazine with GQ. Although his philosophy is to maintain a varied diet, he recognizes that he must take care of what he eats for his profession.
Makis are his favorites and he respects wasabi
Within a sushi menu, the soccer player is clear about what he would order first: the makis. A choice that he shares with many fans of Japanese gastronomy.
One of the most recognizable accompaniments in any Japanese restaurant is wasabi, with which Rodri admits having on occasion made the mistake that many beginners make: going overboard with the quantity.
“Wasabi is not something that is ever explained to you but, in theory, it is to disinfect the fish a little.” The footballer says that he incorporates it with soy, although in very small quantities. Especially after seeing firsthand what happens when you add too much… Since then, he has learned to use it more wisely.
“Sometimes I have made the mistake that everyone has made, adding a lot and not even being able to drink the soy, but I do try to add a little for what they say more than for the flavor.”
So, when Rodri wants to treat himself to a gastronomic treat, he seems to have the menu pretty clear: good quality sushi, a few makis and a reasonable amount of wasabi. A choice that is part of a philosophy that mixes eating a variety of foods, taking care of your diet and also leaving room to enjoy.
