Where the Mediterranean Sea and the Gaià River meet there is a charming villa that seems to have been rescued from the past. Its medieval historic center will make you travel back in time, with quiet walks between centuries-old facades and peaceful turquoise beaches. It is called Altafulla and it is one of the most beautiful places in Tarragona to disconnect, enjoy the Mediterranean calm and see the 2026 solar eclipse in its totality strip.
What to see and do in Altafulla, Tarragona
Remains of the Altafulla wall
Entering Altafulla is already an immersive experience, surrounding you with stone facades that preserve all the charm of the Middle Ages. Especially in Vila Closa, the walled medieval center of cobbled alleys, stately mansions and remains of the old 14th century wall. In this neighborhood you will find the majestic Altafulla Castle, an impressive fortress from the 11th century.

Altafulla Castle on the right and San Martín Church on the left.
Attached to the castle is the church of San Martín, with a huge baroque façade and a tower crowned with a six-slope roof. Nearby is also the Ethnographic Museum, with objects from the town's old rural life. We can also cross the Pasaje de Santa Teresa towards Plaza del Pozo, a beautiful medieval square surrounded by stately houses, with the Town Hall in the center of everything.

Well Square
The perfect tourist walk in this town comes without a map or guide, letting yourself get lost among charming corners and arcaded streets. That way you will reach points of interest such as the Monument to the Castellers, built in the exact place where one of the most historic human pillars of the 19th century was celebrated.

Carrer Botigues de Mar
From the historic center we descend towards the sea to discover the beautiful Carrer Botigues de Mar, an old promenade that maintains its seafaring charm, with fishermen's houses flanking the coast and beautiful beaches, such as Altafulla or Canyadell Cove, which invite you to take a dip.

Altafulla Beach
Last (but not least), this wonderful town has its own ancient site. The Roman villa of Els Munts was an ancient residence of the upper class that still preserves its floor plan, private bathrooms and some of the mosaics that decorated and gave status to the home. A must-see that costs only 4 euros, with beautiful views of the sea.
Where to eat cheap and delicious in Altafulla

Like a good Mediterranean town, Altafulla boasts seafood specialties such as black rice or fish suquet, as well as garden products such as calçots and its romesco sauce. We can try them in legendary restaurants like Granja Sant Francesc, which also has a legendary roast chicken. If you prefer sea views, Restaurant Voramar is beautiful and exquisite.
What to do around Altafulla

Mouth of the Gaià River
On the outskirts of the town is the mouth of the Gaià River, an idyllic, quiet and protected natural area away from crowds where we can take hiking routes on foot or by bicycle. Many of them leave from the hermitage of San Antonio de Padua, an 18th century temple that serves as a starting point. We recommend trying to schedule this walk at sunset, when the water reflects the orange tones of the sky.
Where to see the 2026 solar eclipse in Altafulla
This town is one of those highlighted by the Government of Catalonia to see the 2026 solar eclipse, located in the strip of totality such as Galicia, Mallorca, Navarra and other areas of northern Spain. In Altafulla, the time of darkness will last 55 seconds and can be seen throughout the town, due to its good visibility conditions, the protection of the natural environment and its clear sky.
