Hairdressers agree on the transition to gray hair: "A mistake is to think that it is enough to stop dyeing and wait for them to grow. I do not recommend abandoning the dye suddenly because there is a very marked line of demarcation."

The obsession with covering gray hair has relaxed quite a bit for some time now. Gray hair is no longer seen as a symptom of neglect or lack of care in the image of an adult woman, but as another characteristic that reinforces her naturalness. Of course, it is a relief that dye is an option and not a norm, you just have to look at icons like Laura Sánchez or Ángela de Molina sporting long hair and a captivating beauty in which gray tones are the protagonists. Of course, we know that the transition to uniform silver hair is not that simple; That's why we have decided to take note of the experts in the field: hairdressers.

Pascual Segura, hair and coloring expert, founder of Peluquerías Pascual, explains to Instyle: “The first mistake is to believe that the process consists only of stopping dyeing and waiting for it to grow. This is followed by impatience, which makes many women give up halfway or make drastic decisions. And you have to be patient: depending on the length, the process goes from 6 months to 2 years for very long hair.”

And we often think that forgetting about the dye is the first step to accepting our gray hair, but hairdressers insist on going little by little so that we can be totally comfortable with our new image while we have not yet achieved the final result we are looking for: “I recommend stopping the dye all at once, because for months there remains a very marked line of demarcation. It is better to space out the coloring and opt for transitional highlights or, if the color is dark, lighten it progressively.”

In addition to the dye, it is essential to also pay attention to the haircut, and it can help us achieve our goal faster: “Eliminate traces of previous dyes and provide shapes that help, such as long layers, a medium length of hair at the height of the clavicle or curtain bangs, which divert the gaze from the roots,” explains the hairdresser.

Gray hair also needs pampering and care.

A classic mistake when leaving dyes behind is thinking that our hair does not need as much attention as before. The truth is that we must focus a lot on its hydration, as well as try to avoid heat tools or instead, use thermal protectors when we use them. This step is key to prevent the hair from acquiring a yellowish color due to factors such as sun exposure, pollution, the heat of dryers or straighteners.

To do this, using a violet shampoo once or twice a week is also an option if you want to neutralize those yellower nuances and make the gray hair look brighter and silverier. Of course, don't forget to alternate it with a milder shampoo the rest of the days of the week.
