I have fine hair and these are my tricks to wash it well from the roots and get hair with volume

Posted on 2 October 2026

If any of you have fine hair like me, you will know how complicated it is to gain volume and maintain it. In my case I am always looking for the best tricks and the best products to achieve it. But if I am clear about one thing, it is that hair washing is very important, but I am not just referring to the act of washing, but to doing it well and thoroughly.

Although I have fine hair, since it naturally waves, I gain a lot of texture and I also don't have very oily hair, but I still like to wash my hair frequently. There are weeks when I wash it every day as the vast majority of experts recommend or one day yes and another no. Having clean hair is something that makes me feel good, for me it is non-negotiable, whether it is with a ponytail or clean look.

This is my ritual when I wash my hair

When I wash my hair, something I like to focus on is the scalp. Having healthy and beautiful hair begins with a good cleansing of the skin, but if what we also want is to gain volume from the roots, it is essential to eliminate impurities and grease.

For this, it is important that we focus, when washing with shampoo, on the scalp. What I like most is being able to wash well with my fingers and all over my head. But since I have fine hair I feel that when I wet my hair and apply shampoo, I can't get my fingers under the hair well enough to reach the skin without causing pulling or damaging the hair. So to make this step easier, this is where I make my product mix.

All-in-one shampoo and conditioner

The trick is very simple, but it helps me a lot. What I do is mix the shampoo with a little conditioner in the palm of my hand in the first stroke, and when I say a little it is a little, the size of a hazelnut is enough. With this I make the shampoo creamier and my fingers slide smoothly through the wet hair.

Many of you may be thinking that with this gesture the shampoo loses effectiveness and I add weight to the roots, but in reality no. Firstly, because I work much better at cleaning the scalp without pulling and, secondly, because I do the next soaping with only shampoo and then I finish eliminating any remains that may have remained. One of my favorite shampoos is the Moraccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo and the conditioner that I add over the shampoo I like to be creamy, but it doesn't have to be a specific one. Now I'm using Lakmé Frizz Control which glides wonderfully through my hair thanks to its creamy formula.

Manual massager to wash the roots well

Something that I also usually use to wash the scalp well is a massager. With it, it is much easier to do a deep cleansing, as it helps remove impurities, dead cells and product remains and I later notice this a lot in the root volume. In addition, by massaging the scalp I also activate blood circulation, something very beneficial for the hair as it increases the supply of nutrients.

To facilitate this gesture with the massager, I usually resort to the same trick as before, applying a little conditioner to the shampoo or a little conditioner directly on the tips of the tool. I find this essential to not pull out the hair while I gently slide it along the scalp, something that can be quite easy if we don't do it correctly.

But for the hair to come off well, there is nothing like tilting your head forward to clean the crown and nape area, and to the sides to clean the sides.

Once the hair has been rinsed, only conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends.

After washing my hair well and rinsing it, I apply the conditioner. What is usual and what is normally recommended is to apply it from the mid-lengths to the ends, but I prefer to raise it a little higher, applying it slightly above the mid-lengths and avoiding the roots. I like to do it like this because I notice that this way

Right now I'm using the Aussie Repair & Reviver conditioner which is perfect for making my hair soft and better looking. It has silicones, something that I don't mind because as I told you, I have used them again but in a more intelligent way. Specifically, this conditioner has silicones (Silicon Quaternium-26) that are soluble in water and are easily removed.
