Rosi Fernández, hairdresser: "To dry fine hair, we must keep the dryer at about 15 cm and at medium temperature, moving it continuously so as not to concentrate the heat in a single area."

As the years go by, we notice it even in our hair and the main changes we can see are that our hair is no longer as hydrated or luminous and we even have the feeling that it is less manageable and settles worse. But this does not mean that there is nothing we can do because there really is.

To begin, we must keep in mind that there is a very common gesture that does not benefit the hair at all and after a certain age it is the worst thing we can do. According to hair stylist Rosi Fernández from the Ananda Ferdi Salon, drying your hair with too much heat or not taking the proper distance can be a catastrophe for your hair.

Mature hair is more sensitive to heat

As we age, our hair also ages, and it is especially noticeable in the loss of density, it is drier and duller and in general it no longer has the health or freshness of years ago. For this reason, many women over a certain age seem to have much more straw-colored and frizzy hair.

Much of this problem is due to the way we use the dryer. “The most common mistake made by many 60-year-old women when blow-drying their hair is applying too much heat directly to the hair and from very close range,” says the expert. Precisely, the only thing that can do is worsen the problem since dehydrated and fine hair cannot withstand such direct heat.

The result in the end is always the same, frizzy hair, without shine and without movement. Furthermore, we will be weakening it more and more. The first step that we can carry out and that will do a lot for our hair, is the application of a thermal protector before using any heat tool. These products work very well because they act as a protective shield, protecting the cuticle and preventing dehydration.

This is how to use the dryer to avoid damage

This is not the first time we have talked to you about the importance of drying your hair properly and one of the tricks we have learned is not to dry our hair upside down if we want to avoid frizz.

Drying your hair properly will help prevent hair damage and make it look more beautiful and healthy. The first advice that Rosi gives us is to use a correct temperature, “my recommendation is to always dry your hair at a medium temperature”, this way the hair is damaged much less.

The second piece of advice is distance, “we must keep the dryer at a safe distance and move it continuously so as not to concentrate the heat in a single area,” adds the expert. Between 15-20 centimeters is fine and you have to try to dry it uniformly.

We loved the third tip because although it is very simple, many times after washing our hair we go directly to the dryer without letting the towel absorb all the moisture well. For this reason, the stylist comments that “it is advisable to first remove the humidity with a towel or let the hair dry slightly in the air before using the dryer, this way we reduce the exposure time,” she highlights. With this simple change we will expose our hair much less to the hot air of the dryer, which will greatly reduce damage.
