Neither Frigiliana nor Vejer: the almost unknown white town in Andalusia to enjoy quiet walks and delicious food

Posted on 27 September 2026

On the steepest slopes of the Sierra Nevada hides a picturesque town where water is the protagonist. Pampaneira, Granada, is a town of whitewashed houses at more than 1000 meters above sea level, hanging from the mountain with so much charm and beauty that it has been declared a Historical-Artistic Site.

Pampaneira is an unknown jewel of the Alpujarra of Granada with 300 inhabitants, which still maintains the Moorish aesthetics of yesteryear. Its alleys have central ditches through which meltwater falls, turning the splash into the soundtrack of the old town.

The epicenter of the town is the Plaza de la Libertad. From here you can access the Lower Town, where steep, narrow streets and white stone houses, flat roofs and charming chimneys accumulate. Verónica Street is the most emblematic, with that stream that crosses from top to bottom.

Calle del Silencio is also very popular for its craft shops with colorful carpets, which contrast very authentically with the luminosity of the facades. There is the Asador El Lagar Winery, ideal for trying the authentic Alpujarreño cheese.

Wandering around you will find the Church of the Holy Cross, a beautiful 16th century temple with an austere appearance, built on top of the old mosque. However, its interior is a treasure of ornamentation with Mudejar and Baroque style. Next door is the San Antonio Fountain, which the locals nickname 'la Chumpaneira' and is believed to have powers: whoever drinks from it finds love.

Don't leave without visiting the old Arab laundries or the Abuela Ili artisan chocolate factory, ideal for those with a sweet tooth. This visit ends with the Barranco de Poqueira route, a beautiful 10-kilometer walk that starts from the Plaza de la Libertad and crosses natural areas of the mountain range and the three towns in the area: Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira. It is beautiful at any time of the year.
