If gray hair already needs specific care to make it look beautiful and soft, it is during the summer when dryness can increase and its fiber deteriorate. It is hair that is more vulnerable to solar radiation, since by losing melanin, let's say that it does not have its natural protective shield like normal hair.

Although not all gray hair is the same, dermatologist and trichologist Alba Gómez comments that gray hair generally has a harder and more rebellious texture; this can be accentuated in climates that are even more humid, such as coastal areas. But it is not the only drawback that gray hair has, it can also turn yellow due to solar radiation that oxidizes the hair structure.

Regarding the unwanted tones that gray hair can present, gray hair expert Beatriz Patón indicates that: “You don't choose the shade by taste, you choose it by necessity.” According to the specialist, violet neutralizes yellow, but applying excessively blue pigments on a yellowish base can cause a greenish tone and this is exactly what we do not want.

To keep gray hair soft, hairdresser Paul Tudor advises using products that provide intense hydration. “A nourishing shampoo and mask makes finer gray hair look more hydrated and have a sealed, frizz-free look,” advises Tudor.

Another product that the expert recommends is vegetable oils as a finishing product. Oils not only nourish the hair but also help create an oily layer on the hair and thus reduce frizz, something that is usually very common in gray hair. On the other hand, oils provide lipids and flexibility, something that this type of hair lacks.

Protecting your hair is another essential step to avoid damaging your hair and turning gray hair yellow. Before using the dryer, apply a heat protectant and do not abuse heat tools. Paul Tudor advises combing gray hair gently, once it is dry, with a detangling comb to avoid damaging hair that is usually more fragile and fine.

Likewise, Alberto Sanguino believes that you should “start brushing from the ends, gently, so as not to tighten the hair or encourage the cuticle to open,” he explains.
