Isabel Pantoja has moved to one of the most paradisiacal, quiet and luxurious corners of the entire Canary Islands, to be close to her niece Anabel and rest near the sea. Specifically, to the town of Las Meloneras, in the south of Gran Canaria. This town with sea views, exquisite cuisine and an iconic promenade that can be explored on foot has the best sunsets in the entire Atlantic.
What to see in Las Meloneras, Gran Canaria
Las Meloneras is a tourist area full of luxury hotels, spas, shops, restaurants and even golf courses, under the eternal summer of the south of Gran Canaria. Its beach has fine sand, with calm turquoise waters that invite you to relax and leave all the stress of everyday life at home. To your left are the dunes of Maspalomas, access prohibited. However, its beach still maintains that eternal, golden dune landscape.
The promenade connects this beach, known as Playa de Maspalomas, with the beach that is hidden at the other end of the town, Playa de Meloneras. Right in the center, the Maspalomas Lighthouse presides over everything with its view of the ocean, an imposing 55-meter-high marine tower that has been there for 125 years. At sunset, everything turns orange and the sun falls into the sea, with this lighthouse marking the horizon and becoming the best postcard of the island.
In the middle of the walk is the site of Punta Mujeres, a coastal settlement of the aboriginals dated between the 7th and 9th centuries that can still be visited. On the other side of Las Meloneras, just bordering the dunes, La Charca is a beautiful lagoon of migratory birds that serves as a transition between the tourist center and the protected natural park.
Where to eat cheap and delicious in Las Meloneras, Gran Canaria
The entire maritime boulevard is full of terraces and restaurants to eat or have a bite to eat while looking at the sea. Many are tourist traps, but at Restaurante Casa Serafín you can taste authentic Canarian recipes: their blanched gofio and their sea bass with wrinkled potatoes are finger-licking good.
What to do near Las Meloneras, Gran Canaria
Half an hour by car from Las Meloneras is the impressive Puerto de Mogán. This town, known as 'The Venice of the Canary Islands', is a town of saltwater canals, surrounded by whitewashed houses, bougainvillea and traditional Canarian charm. It is very crowded, so it is perfect to discover without spending the night there on a day trip.
