Mountain routes with lagoons, castles and an eternal beach: this is the town of Castellón that locals frequent

Posted on 10 May 2026

The days are getting longer and the temperatures are starting to become reasonable enough for a beach getaway. This is the time when the Valencian Community is filled with tourists. However, there are still discreet, small and quiet towns where life remains authentic. Almenara is one of those places, the ideal fusion of sea and mountains on the coast of Castellón.

This little seaside corner bathed by the Mediterranean is small, but it has everything. In Almenara there are mountain landscapes, marshes and lagoons with protected ecosystems, a historic old town with imposing monuments and an idyllic beach with turquoise waters. Therefore, it is the getaway for everyone: there is hiking, there are water sports and there are quiet walks by the sea.

The town was built on the slopes of the Almenara castle, a 10th century Muslim fortress that maintains its watchtowers: L'Agüelet and L'Agüeleta, made of masonry. You can go up to them, taking a four-kilometer circular route from Castellón and Moncofa streets. They are steep slopes, but it is worth it: the views of the entire town and the surrounding landscapes are unbeatable.

The town is also very pleasant, with charming alleys and a very curious bell tower church, built in 1721 with a façade of ashlars and blue marble. Nearby, between the town and the beach, is the Punto de Cid site, the remains of fifteen towers where Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar began the reconquest of the area.

In terms of nature, Almenara is surrounded by jewels such as the Marjal de los Ullals or Els Estanys, a place of three freshwater lagoons that flow from the Sierra de Espadán and are a unique and protected ecosystem. In addition, just a few kilometers from the urban center is Casablanca Beach, a beautiful sand and pebble beach of more than 2 kilometers with a dune reserve and beautiful turquoise water. What more could you ask for from a summer getaway?
