Calm, comfortable and cosy are words to describe a room where we imagine ourselves relaxing and rejuvenating the body and mind.

It is very personal how this space is styled, but a comfortable chair or sofa is a good place to start. The quality and texture of faux leather has improved immensely and is a popular choice. Look for soft tans and dusky pinks, as with the Madras chair and ottoman. The ottoman doubles beautifully as a side table for that morning cup of tea or equally at the end of the day, when you are enjoying a glass of wine.

To me, a group of cushions is the epitome of cosy, for a personal haven they should not be stiff and formal. Add a touch of personality by choosing something with style, shape and pattern. Florals have emerged as this season’s trend, from bright graphic flowers through to soft, muted pastels. Included are also soft, textured fabrics embellished with neutral-toned tassels.

A throw gives that feeling of warmth but also a glorious opportunity to relax and snuggle down for a catnap or to get immersed in a good book. Mt Somers Station has produced a New Zealand-made, 100 per cent woollen throw that will remind you fondly of earlier times. Draped for style or used for warmth, they are a must-have.

Don’t forget the lighting; a beautifully structured soft glowing lamp is all you need to finish the look. The right lighting is essential to achieve ambience and harmony; overhead lighting is great if you are working but when relaxing there’s nothing better than a lamp’s soft glow. MRD has produced these stunning statement lamps with large curvaceous shades and soft-toned natural concrete and resin bases.
